February 27th is World NGO Day. On World NGO Day, we celebrate the global contributions made by non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Tackling a range of social, environmental and humanitarian challenges, NGOs are usually independent, not-for-profit organisations working at local, national or international levels. The Movements’ Trust believes that social action is desperately needed in today’s world  - people-powered solutions are essential way we can rise to the challenge presented by the climate and nature emergencies, as well as the threat of fragmented communities, a rising cost of living, pollution and lack of access to sustainable employment- movements like Autosafety - Uganda who take a practical and constructive approach to cutting vehicle emissions and improving communities. Social movements can respond swiftly to opportunity, represent communities and their specific needs, mobilise energy and strengthen democracy and economies - they offer something unique that we should protect, rather than forcing them to register as a charity in order to access funding. Community organisers and social movements are severely hampered by the barriers to funding that informal and unregistered entities face, particularly in their early stages - our mission is to partner with them, act as charity sponsor,  and advocate for their work so they can access the funding they need, as well as to provide other support that maximises their effectiveness. We are completing First Nations University of Canada Four Seasons of Reconciliation program, attending Indigenous theatre and films, participating in guided hikes with Indigenous Elders, and much more. Truth and Reconciliation is an ongoing journey and must be practiced and advanced daily. We have prepared some actions that workplaces can take to advance reconciliation: - Education: Attend Indigenous-led workshops or trainings. Ensure the relationship is not extractive in nature by encouraging reciprocity. - Show leadership: Keep learning and share resources and learnings with others in your network. - Create an Action Plan: Create a personal and an organizational Reconciliation Action Plan.
