I joined a fan e-bus at the British Formula 1 GP – what a fun experience. Wondering why? Each year almost half a million people attend the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, with the majority arriving by car! Planning, managing, and minimising the environmental impact of such a crowd is a significant challenge. Yesterday, my Rosberg Philanthropies team and I joined The Oxford SDG Impact Lab, Formula 1 and Silverstone  to tackle this issue head-on with our innovative Rosberg Climate Fellows. Some of my highlights from today was our Fan Bus Activation, where we explored sustainable travel options for fans. This included encouraging the use of buses and carpooling to reduce emissions. Given that Silverstone is quite tricky to reach due to its location, making it not as accessible as Zandvoort where everyone can go by bike, this initiative is particularly important. The fan bus option we showcased allows people to take public transportation to a bus shuttle hub and then take the bus directly to the track. The feedback and enthusiasm from the fans were super encouraging, and it was great to see so many people interested in making a difference. Additionally, we engaged in a biodiversity activity, setting up insect traps around the circuit with the University of Oxford fellows. This hands-on research will help us understand the Grand Prix's impact on local ecosystems and assist with developing strategies to protect and promote biodiversity at future events. I'm looking forward to the students' findings and will of course be sharing the impactful results of their hard work in the next couple of months. What innovative solutions do you think could help reduce the carbon footprint of major sporting events? I’ve been to 5 GP locations: Melbourne, Singapore, Barcelona, Zandvoort, AbuDabi. They all have their unique settings and local culture which means one solution won’t fit all. But small things make a HUGE diffence. Ie Zandvoort isn’t only about the train and bike, it’s that it’s physically impossible to reach by car race weekend. Compare that to Silverstone who boast “We're set in the heart of England. 60 minutes south of Birmingham with road access exceptionally easy along the A43 dual carriageway from the M1 motorway”. …!Exceptionally easy! Change the language, ban the cars near towns. Then see how behaviour changes.

The best way to cut down on pollution? Begin working together! Not *just* climbing onto a bus together. Not *just* recycling, reusing, or reducing. Not *just* living on a farm growing our own food year-round. It's the mindset shift! Change your attitude and the way you view life's challenges. If you make the conscious decision to do this one thing you are more likely to do this other one and so on. This snowballs into company culture. If you're in a company where the CEO cycles to work, guess what? You're more likely to cycle too! No matter what seniority you're at, it's your own responsibility to act with integrity and be the best person you can be for yourself. You never know how that may inspire someone else!

Important topic to tackle. And good proposals already posted! One can affect to one’s choices at varying levels, and making those choices environmentally sustainable should be made more atractive than the conventional options. Not sure if these were already proposed, but few pointers that came to mind: Utilization of public transportation when possible, and to ensure that the public transportation would also be the most fluent access including shuttle service from the public transport destination point. Trains and electric busses would provide environmental atmosphere with fewest amount of emissions in the crowded areas. Utilization of renewables to power ancillary services at the GP location. It doesnt always shine or wind, but theres also the possibility to use movable renewably charged power storages for short time power needs. GP organizers could arrange attractively priced electric plane charter routes for short haul distances around the GP location. F1 teams could use electric trucks to move their gear between tracks. Not only is it cheaper in the long run but also gives the audience the pro-environmental influence.

Hosting a major sporting event can significantly impact the environment, but we have the power to make a positive difference by focusing on sustainability and resilience. 🌍 We can reduce carbon emissions by switching to renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind turbines. ☀️ In addition, setting up a carbon offset program would allow attendees to help counterbalance the emissions from their travel or the event itself, with the funds raised supporting important local environmental projects. 🌱 Choosing local suppliers for our food and beverages can help minimize transportation emissions. 🍅 We can also encourage our vendors to adopt sustainable practices, such as compostable utensils and containers, to reduce environmental impact. 🌿 Furthermore, we should consider incorporating new technologies like smart grids for energy management, 📊 efficient lighting systems, 💡 and low-emission vehicles for on-site transportation. 🚗

There are hundreds of existing solutions, that we know work and that we can just implement. (Like vegan/veggie regional/seasonal/organic catering, zero waste initiatives, renewable energy and encouraging travel through low-carbon ways,..) The most innovative solution is probably to rethink the way we design and organize events in general. By rethinking: do we need this event in the first place? How is it contributing to achieving the sustainable development goals? There are some great resources and initiatives in the UK (A Greener Future ) in German speaking countries (my companies the Sustainable Events Academy & the Sustainable Events Club) and around the world working on this for years. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel. 🤗 let‘s work together 👨👩👧👧

Sport is a way to seeing how refreshing it can be. We must refresh the planet with these goals of feeding everything even if it is shy and not a house pet. Be generous with how the rules of endurance free sports fuel all the activity. When I was working in junior schools their artwork was football anatomy. Got to keep a good safe reputation for each game and think twice about fossil formula one and some unprotected rock climbing I suppose.

Nico Rosberg The Goodwood Revival and Festival of Speed also do this and have been doing for years... Should be encouraged at a lot more events, besides being climate friendly just makes everything so much easier for the fans.... James King

Nico Rosberg - we have developed a bio based sound Barrier wall solution that not only cuts down vehicle noise. It Also encourages bio diversity and removes 1 ton of co2 per sqm per year thus generating carbon offsets . We believe we could help motor racing get to net zero … if only we could get a conversation going ..
