I surprised myself on Monday! Made a spontaneous decision to volunteer, together with my daughter, at Willing Hearts, a soup kitchen and it was time well spent! With no one to tell us what to do, we gotta take initiative or figure things out on our own. There were no fixed roles and you take charge of how you want to help. We decided to help an old lady who was alone at one of the cutting station & found ourselves cutting heads after heads of brussel sprouts. Many hands make light work though! It's satisfying to see the basketful of brussel sprouts at the end :) We also helped at the packing station and also odd jobs like unpacking rice from carton boxes. Willing Hearts delivers daily meals to more than 7,000 beneficiaries of different profiles every day, island wide, 365 days a year. Though it was just a few hours, it felt good that my small efforts had contributed to "feed the hungry & warm some hearts". This experience brings to mind what we believe at Republic Polytechnic (RP) - that education extends beyond the classroom, that service learning can be a powerful approach to enrich the learning experience for both students and staff. Beyond external courses or e-learning, I can engage in unstructured learning activities (such as volunteering) that supports my core work and interest for up to 40 hours a year. Our lecturers also go for industry attachments for up to 6 months to keep up-to-date with what is happening in the industry. When was the last time you learnt beyond the confines of the classroom? Service-learning is a powerful approach to education that promotes student learning and development while addressing human and community needs. Philippine Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are recognizing the value of service-learning and are actively integrating it into their educational systems. We did a qualitative study that examine the mechanism of service-learning in five Jesuit higher education institutions across the Philippines. Using Furco's Self-Assessment Rubric, we evaluate the institutionalization of service-learning and find that each institution exhibits unique experiences and different levels of implementation. However, what is clear is the shared commitment of these institutions to service and social justice as part of their mission and identity. By implementing sustained commitment and persistence, we can ensure that service-learning becomes an integral part of higher education institutions across the Philippines and beyond. There were great celebrations in An Cosán this week as our final year BA degree* learners attended their last class! Well done to everyone on their hard work and commitment over the last three years, and we wish you all the best as you complete your final assignments and move on to the next exciting chapter in your lives! It was lovely to hear the learners' final reflection: "It was a happy, but emotional day as we all reflected on our achievements so far and also on the events in our lives that brought us to this point. We discussed our reasons for learning with An Cosán and our expectations for our professional lives. "There were tears shed and a lot of hugs but there was also a lot of laughter and friendship that has developed over the years. We reminisced on group work, essay writing, referencing and presentations. We reflected on our reflective writing and how it has all made us more self-aware and thoughtful, which we carry with us to our communities, literally all over Ireland. "We eventually connected all the theory and the practical and how, with the support of each other, we found the strength to carry on when we felt like walking out the door. Everyone in the class has their own unique story and it was a privilege to hear and share our lives for the last three years. "An Cosán has helped us achieve a Level 7 degree and we are very proud of ourselves. Some of us will continue on to other education, some of us are working or will be working within our community – but all of us are changed for the better.
