It's World Ranger Day! Thank you Park Rangers for protecting our nature and heritage. You inspire us to care for our planet! Here are 5 facts about Park Rangers in the U.S. in case you didn't know...
1. The term "Ranger" dates back to the 17th century in the US, and was derived from the word "range" (to travel over a large area). The title "ranger" in the modern sense was first applied to a reorganization of the fire warden force in the Adirondack Park after fires burned 80,000 acres in the park.
2. The first director of the National Park Service, Stephen T. Mather, called Harry Yount, gamekeeper of Yellowstone National Park, the "father of the ranger service, as well as the first national Park Ranger". Yount was hired in 1880 to enforce the prohibition on hunting in the park. He also acted as a guide and escort for visiting officials.
3. According to an official study commissioned by the National Parks Service, Some "Buffalo Soldiers" became Park Rangers in the late 1890s. Approximately 500 Buffalo Soldiers served as Park Rangers at Yosemite, Sequoia, and General Grant National Parks, in 1899, 1903, and 1904.
4. The first Park Rangers appeared in 1905 (33 years after the first NP), and it was not until 11 years later that national parks and the national park ranger were unified under one centralized government agency, the National Park Service.
5. During World War II, many Park Rangers were drafted into military service or assigned to guard strategic resources within the parks. After the war, some Park Rangers resumed their civilian duties, while others remained armed and trained as law enforcement officers.
