“In cybersecurity you’re never bored! Everything is evolving and changing all the time.” So says Ana-Maria, Nexova Clients Programmes Director, another one of Nexova’s ‘Everyday Heroes’. In advance of International Women in Engineering Day on 23 June, she tells us why cybersecurity is the ideal field to work in. “I’ve been working for the company since 2021 and am now based in our state-of-the-art Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence in Libin, Belgium. Our environmentally-friendly building has a lot of natural light, creating an open and airy atmosphere. And its location is fantastic, being situated in the middle of nature, which is uncommon compared with most business buildings I've visited worldwide. Together, this provides an environment that’s very conducive to day-to-day work and innovation. “It’s difficult to pin down just one thing that I like most about my job. I enjoy working in an international environment, interacting with colleagues from diverse nationalities: our people are from everywhere! This cultural diversity is crucial in the world of cybersecurity and cyber resilience, adding a valuable dimension to our daily work and making it even more interesting. “I appreciate the continuous learning that comes from this cultural aspect. Additionally, I enjoy the variety of projects we undertake and the wide range of hot topics we deal with in cybersecurity. The diversity of technologies and teams we work with adds to the dynamic, engaging nature of my job. “Cybersecurity is constantly changing and is one of the most attractive domains to work in. I don't know anyone who has left cybersecurity. When people want to make a change, they can do so within cybersecurity, even making a total career shift while staying in the same domain. This kind of flexibility and variety is rare. “Having a gender-balanced presence in the cyber industry is something we are aiming at, but in reality it’s not that simple because we are talking about a sector where women were, and still are, under-represented. From a professional perspective, we need more diverse backgrounds, and not just engineers. If we are look at the cyber threats landscape, we have pressing needs to understand motivations, attackers’ mindsets and drive etc. to be able to stay ahead and this needs a set of skills ranging from psychology to languages to cyber diplomacy. “The Women4Cyber Foundation aims to contribute to a gender-inclusive cybersecurity community. I chose to be part of the story as a mentor because I believe we need this kind of inclusion AND because I want to give back to the community to help it grow. We don’t just talk about the technicalities of the domain and what training is useful but also about soft skills, and I believe we make a difference.” https://lnkd.in/e7WdqAbE #INWED24 #enhancedbyengineering

NY 2024 DEI Power Player & Real Estate Trailblazer, Executive VP, Advisor to the CEO at Per Scholas & Human Interest Storyteller
I'm excited to hear what Luis Arzu, Eddie Bright Jr., and Alvin Abrams will share with us as leaders in the cyber sector at 1 pm EST today. I recently read about the incident where a Hong Kong firm claimed a $25 million loss to fraudsters using deepfake technology to allegedly impersonate the company's chief financial officer via video conferencing. This AI-driven incident reads more like the plot from a science fiction movie than a real-world event — but it’s not just theory. If true, it’s a watershed moment testing our collective ability to respond to the next evolution of social engineering and deception attacks. Diversity and Cybersecurity Go Hand In Hand Hackers are evolving, but our defenses aren't. The cybersecurity gap widens, leaving businesses vulnerable. Diverse talent and targeted training are the keys to unlocking untapped potential and building an impenetrable force against cyber threats. Tech diversity starts with the talent pipeline. CIO highlights Per Scholas and TEKsystems’ years-long partnership and how it brings businesses diverse talent on the cutting edge, shaping long-term business growth and diversity in the tech industry. Having a broad range of perspectives and experiences to best detect, protect, and respond to cybersecurity threats is critical. ITSecurity suggests “Diversity and inclusion are not just buzzwords but rather crucial components that strengthen the cybersecurity field. Embracing diversity leads to more effective problem-solving, innovation, and decision-making processes while bridging the skills gap and fostering cultural understanding." Value lifelong learning. Technology, especially cybersecurity, is constantly evolving and the best way to stay competitive is the pursuit of new knowledge. Forbes shares “Professional students, whether they are graduates of a traditional four-year college or not, can advance their learning throughout their careers with skills training programs. Cybersecurity should be a priority for everyone. SecurityIntelligence explains “Every business, no matter the industry or the size, needs to think about cybersecurity.” Upskilling current company talent ensures they have the foundational in-house experience to understand cyber threats better. You'll be able to learn more about the critical need for diversity within the cyber industry. In our most recent piece, we highlight last year’s Per Scholas’ Diverse by Design roundtables and the insights we’ve gained from these talks with esteemed speakers. We’re excited to invite you to our first roundtable, where distinguished speakers will highlight how a diverse workforce is not just beneficial but essential for our nation’s security and the future of cybersecurity. Culture has a significant influence on cybersecurity. (you will be shocked to know this) Ever noticed how culture influences cybersecurity? Here's what I've seen: 1. Different Places, Different Methods ↳ Each country handles cybersecurity in its own way. ↳ In India and Australia, I saw very different approaches and ideas. 2. Learning from Each Other ↳ India's flexible tactics taught me to be adaptable in security. ↳ Australia showed me the importance of following rules and protecting data. 3. Mixing the Best of Both Worlds ↳ Combining ideas from different cultures can make cybersecurity stronger. ↳ It's about finding the best approach, not just one way for all. 4. Thinking Globally About Cybersecurity ↳ Understanding these differences helps us build better worldwide security. ↳ We can improve a lot by learning from how others do things. Your Thoughts? How does culture affect cybersecurity where you work or live? Let's chat about it. Share your thoughts or questions! #cybersecurity #globalsecurity Catharsis.net.au
