VARrrrrrrrgh! A new word I have invented to cover off what has been a tumultuous week for VAR. I feel Liverpool's pain. As a Burnley fan, good ol' VAR stepped in an suggested a winning goal for the Clarets was a "clear and definite" hand ball, so disallowed (sorry / not sorry Notts fans). In slow motion it could clearly be seen it was above his shirt line and in fact his arms were moving as part of his natural run.... ... but at least it went to VAR properly. In the Liverpool game, it was clearly onside and the VAR didn't overrule. After spending a year in the Championship with no VAR, I can say with some gusto that I am not convinced it isn't killing the game. Sure, all decisions in the lower leagues are made on field but you win some, lose some. Overall, most balance out over the season. Not so much in the Premiership. ❌ It needs work and quickly, before the fans lose complete faith. ❌ That's the thing with technology. With all the talk of AI and computers "doing the thinking" it's just not true. We are some way off that, there is always a human element and unfortunately we are sentient and have emotions, which leads to the wrong decisions at times. Tech is here to stay, and I suspect so is VAR. However tech should also enrich lives, solve problems, give users the tools to enable them to do whatever they are doing in a more efficient manner. It should remove the mundane, remote the repetitive, remove the HUMAN ERROR. It won't replace us, it can't (yet), but it shouldn't make processes more complex. So whether that is VARrrrrrrrgh, or your own business processes, if you feel improvement can be made with tech it probably can. No harm looking right? Let's hope things improve on the field for VAR too. P.S. With much needed points and playing Luton tonight, I hope it isn't as controversial! The Importance of Game Intelligence in Modern Football ⚽🧠   I want to share some of my insights from a Sky Sports article, "Future of Football: How will tactics evolve?", in which coaches from across the game share their view on the tactics of tomorrow.   🧩 Over the last decades, the player's focus has shifted from their individual performance to the collective team performance. Today, players actively engage in tactical aspects of the game, with coaches and clubs weaving principles and tactical fundamentals into their playstyle. This demands fluidity, adaptability, and a shared understanding from both players and coaches. ⏩ The speed of the game has increased. This leads to a higher frequency of actions and less space and time to perform these actions, which requires higher processing and handling speed. This speed of play, and thus the required decision-making speed, is expected to continue to develop in the coming years. 📊 Technology and data made its entrance into the sport, and continue to be more prominent. For both players and coaches, being able to interpret and use data as a supporting tool in their development is vital. 📈 My main conclusion from reading this article is that game intelligence will be the most important trait of modern footballers (if it isn’t already).
