How are young people start exploring their career options matter
I've been quiet on here- but only because it's been such a busy year at NYC Department of Youth & Community Development! I'm lucky to be a part of the most amazing DYCD team who worked incredibly hard- together with our non-profit, government and private sector partners- to accomplish so much this year. 2023 will be a hard year to top for the DYCD #youthworkforce team, but that won't stop us from trying. The 2024 Ladders for Leaders application is officially launched. If you know an ambitious young New Yorker looking for a paid summer internship, encourage them to apply! If you're an employer who wants access to the best future talent in NYC, you need to #hirenycyouth through this program!

Years ago, my friend, who's a lobbyist, invited me to a fancy fundraiser for a national nonprofit. People, mostly government affairs professionals, paid thousands of dollars to be in a historic building where Senators stood at a food station and served a special plate from their state. When I went inside, to my surprise, members of Congress were not surrounded by staff. They were alone. And let me tell you, I took advantage of that. As I went from food station to food station, I would introduce myself and the organization Pay Our Interns and ask them why they didn't pay their interns (or, in a few cases, thank them for doing so). Usually, staff would interject at that point and say they have a vote or event to catch, and you don't get an answer. This time, they couldn't go anywhere since they had food to serve. I ended up having some productive conversations and even got some commitments from members to offer paid internships (this was before a dedicated intern fund came to be in mid-2018). Some were even more blunt than usual; one senator said, "No wonder all my interns look rich," after I told him his office didn't offer paid internships. I bring this up because access and proximity to power can be helpful. Attending that event was more productive than doing 50 advocacy meetings on Hill. Access is given and taken in places like DC based on how you operate. If you speak out too often, or against a policy or elected, etc., you might get disinvited from an exclusive reception or gala. That serves as a powerful deterrent to keep organizations and individuals in check. While I've learned to pick your battles, it is always important to remember that you have a responsibility to your community/ies to speak truth to power when you're in these elite places. So yes, attending these events is great and fun; however, if you think it's more important to attend xyz reception so you can have fancy food and fancy drinks and take pics with celebrities over advocating for truth and justice, then you're doing it wrong.

Question: I want my son to do a summer internship at my company but he doesn’t like the idea of reporting to me. What can I do? Answer: While it might be tempting to oversee and mentor your child yourself (after all, you know your business best!) give the role of supervisor to someone else. 👷 By having your child report to another seasoned employee, you give them the space to work 💼 and learn 📈 independently without feeling like you’re standing over their shoulder or pressuring them to perform, even if aren’t. Making your child feel like they’ll be independent in the role will help them feel more at ease and even excited about the opportunity to flex their skills. 💪 For even more advice, check out this week’s blog where I’m talking all about inspiring your child to take over the family business. ▶️ https://lnkd.in/dGM4V82K #debbiebabblaw #estateplan #assetprotection #wealthprotection #wealthbuilding #trustsandwills #losangelesestateplan #CAestateplanningattorney #losangelesattorney #familybusiness #smallbusiness #family #familylegacy #personalfamilylawyer #personalfamilylawyerCA #losangelespersonalfamilylawyer #generationalwealth #multigenerationlawyer #peaceofmind #adulting #specialneedsplanning #specialneedstrust #specialneedsadvocate #parenting #familylegacy #guardian #businessplanning #avoidprobate #losangelesmom #CAmom
