NPR can and should exist. All viewpoints, even bias, are part of a robust free and independent media landscape. Yet, it has been clear for decades that NPR has an ingrained outlook that should not require public funding. This is also the case for PBS and the aged Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Both relics, of a Great Society effort in 1967 to upgrade and expand choices when there were three networks, no cable and no internet. Government needs to take its hand out of so called " public broadcasting" and allow its viewers to embrace it- if you prefer BBC and Anglophilia , leftist politics, and kids programming , and other valuable fare- support it and pay for it.
The rot runs deep at NPR. This is what we must do now

How much sense does it make to hire someone and then not supervise them or at the very least give them feedback? None. Why then is it generally accepted that our civic responsibility is fulfilled in voting alone?! Democracy demands rich participation. We have stay connected to the folks we elect to represent us if we want an effective goverment that reflects our values. That kind of advocacy and action is empowering, hopeful, and transformational. Check out RESULTS founder Sam Daley-Harris on NPR's Here and Now talking about building the skills for deeper civic engagement: 'Reclaiming Our Democracy' book urges advocacy beyond hashtags and petitions | Here & Now (wbur.org)

I am a fierce defender of the ABC, but as the saying goes, we criticise those we love the most, and this really is a terrible decision Richard Kingsmill, one of the most important and celebrated voices in the Australian music industry, is seemingly the victim of the public broadcaster’s desperate pivot towards a younger demographic. While seemingly progressive, the strategy is akin to chasing shadows, especially in an era where the very audiences they now chase are notoriously elusive and no longer tethered to radio as a medium. Sadly, I believe the decision underscores a fundamental misstep: sacrificing part of the foundation of Triple J and Double J in an effort to win with a fickle, digitally-native audience - listeners, more comfortable with streaming and social media, and bypassing traditional radio altogetherc rendering the move not just risky but potentially futile. What remains of the station's identity risks being diluted, if not lost, altogether. While adaptation and evolution are key to survival in today’s media landscape, it shouldn’t come at the expense of the station’s brand, its values, and its audience. In an attempt to stay relevant, the ABC may find itself in no-man's land – losing both its identity and failing to reach the intended new audience. What do they say about winning the battle but losing the war? Ok, therein end the morning rant. I will stop shaking my fist at the sky and step down from the soap box.

Reasons leading an executive member organization is a gift: - You get to speak to those executives every day. You are plugged into the challenges and opportunities they are experiencing. Very current, very relevant concerns, celebrations, needs and ideas. - You find out that virtually all of them have earned their way into their roles. Not just by their professional pedigree, but also by their ability to stay authentic and kind. - You make colleagues, peers and friends. Some might become business partners and perhaps even employers. Others become your fans and supporters. Work life, just like personal life, has ups and downs. Your peers understand.

Driving to the TVP Forum event in Slough this morning, I wondered how long it would be before I heard the words John Benjamin and David Brent! It seems that everyone dealing with Slough, from local property companies to the Local Authority, is stuck on the problems. Bingo! One of the speakers in the first panel trotted out the two oft mentioned names and then sat back to revel in their apparent (and highly predictable) wit!! Having recently spent time in Dubai I come at it with a different perspective. The positive mental attitude displayed in abundance in Dubai is something that would so-benefit Slough. Slough is an international location. It offers unique advantages that should not be overlooked. With a diverse population (150 languages spoken in the town), only 14 minutes from the West End by rail and only 10 minutes drive from one of the world's busiest airports, Slough is effectively the next London Borough. The Local Authority have made a complete hash of it and bankrupted the town in their over ambitious and ill-advised property development strategy, yet there remain many reasons to invest in the town. Slough should embrace its diversity making it a leading USP for the town and focus its attention on becoming more integrated with central London highlighting its access to a highly skilled labour force and offering significant cost advantages. The failing retail market and post-Covid demand for offices were both used this morning as excuses why little is happening in the town and led to the erroneous conclusion that residential development is the only realistic remaining solution. Is that really the best solution? As Margaret Thatcher once said, "No! No! No!" We need to forget the past, embrace the future, and aim high. Slough has enormous potential for development but it needs to be high quality development and we need the right people around the table with the vision to make it happen. Stop focusing on the problems and start focusing on the solutions and if they want a continuing role in local government, perhaps the Local Authority could focus on facilitating delivery of the future rather than frustrating it as they have in the past. At least Berkeley Homes are a stand out contributor to the future of Slough with their amazing redevelopment of the former Horlicks factory. High quality residential development which, importantly, has added considerably to the public realm. Ashby Capital are also to be commended for their foresight in delivering the first phase of The Future Works and then partnering with Paul Rostas' team at Plus X who have delivered one of their trademark innovation hubs which exudes collaborative vibrancy. They and others like them are the future of Slough and should be celebrated.
