"From Pearl Harbor to 9/11 to Hurricane Sandy to COVID, we've always been there for the city," Oliver said. "We plan on always being here." Great to hear our President and CEO LaFontaine E. Oliver and our Archivist Andy Lanset talk about the past, present, and future of WNYC in this excellent piece by Austin Fuller for Current: News for Public Media.

President of the GAB, Bob Houghton, penned an Op-Ed on the progress made and still left to be made on the AM for Every Vehicle Act. "Legislation moving forward to protect AM Radio," follows an Op-Ed written by Houghton earlier this year. "As I write this article, Georgia is under a hurricane watch. Broadcasters around Georgia are prepared to do what they do best: Prepare and inform their audience of the latest conditions, and stand ready after the emergency to support their communities." Houghton discusses the great bi-partisan progress the bill has made in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The AM for Every Vehicle Act has significance important in ensuring the safety of citizens, specifically during natural disasters. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/geiNVXN4

Our thoughts are with those affected by Hurricane Idalia. The devastation has been immense, and the recovery process will be long. Before the hurricane hit, Governor Ron DeSantis commented on the state’s insurance market, saying he expected more capital to be deployed to Florida if this hurricane season were mild. Given the hurricane season we’ve had already, it raises questions about the future of our insurance market. What are your thoughts? How should insurance companies respond in the aftermath, and what role should the state government play in regulating the market or providing aid? https://lnkd.in/eunWfVNe

The things that happen when we're not looking ... It's appalling, especially given the focus on the impacts of climate change, that the story of disastrous floods in Brazil has gone under-reported around the world. This from ICRC: 'Since 29 April 2024, the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul has experienced rainfall three times higher than the average for this time of year. More than 440 out of Rio Grande do Sul's 496 municipalities reported flood-related issues, affecting around 1.9 million people. A total of 141 people are reported missing, 756 injured, over 600,000 people displaced, and more than 81,000 living in shelters.' This from a friend in Porto Alegre, in the worst-affected region: 'On 1st of may stated heavy rains and flooded most of the cities in Rio Grande do Sul. For you to have an idea, the area affected is nearly de size of the UK. A lot of people lost everything. In some places all the houses of a road have gone. There are some places that still with water. The capital's airport is still with water. It's the worst ever disaster, it's bigger than Katrina, the only difference is that we thankfully have a smaller number of dead in comparison with the size of the disaster.' 🌩️ Houston is Strong, but could we be stronger? 🤔 Last night's storm was a stark reminder of the challenges we face living in a region prone to extreme weather. While I'm grateful for the tireless efforts of our city officials and first responders, I can't help but wonder if we have a system in place to benchmark our disaster preparedness against other cities with similar risks. 🧐 Do we have a way to measure how our response times, infrastructure resilience, and community outreach compare to other cities? Could sharing best practices and lessons learned help us all become better prepared? As we rebuild and recover, let's explore how we can enhance our readiness for future storms. Together, we can make Houston even stronger. 💪 #HoustonStrong #DisasterPreparedness #ResilientCities #ClimateAction

Check out this insightful article by Johanna Bejarano at Northwest Public Broadcasting, where colleagues and I were interviewed. In times of crisis, clear communication is crucial. Our partnership with community-based organizations has enhanced our ability to deliver vital information. Exciting progress in Central Washington: Spanish-language wildfire preparedness workshops are empowering residents with essential knowledge. But our journey doesn't end here. We're committed to expanding our efforts, ensuring every voice is heard and every family is safe. Yet, our mission is ongoing. Looking ahead, we are dedicated to extending these efforts, ensuring that every voice finds representation and every family is equipped with the tools to stay secure.
