NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s Post

When elite gymnast Olivia Kelly was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 16, she feared it would jeopardize her gymnastics career. But with the help of Dr. Benjamin Roye, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon with #OchSpine at #NYPMorganStanley, and Mary Miceli, a physical therapist at #NYPWestchester, Olivia was able to stop the 30-degree curve in her spine from progressing, wearing a brace and practicing the Schroth method, a scoliosis-specific therapy focused on spinal alignment through stretching, strengthening, and breathing exercises. “I’m so grateful to Dr. Roye and Mary,” says the 18-year-old from northern New Jersey. Today, Olivia looks forward to competing for Mizzou in the fall and pursuing her dream of representing Barbados at the Games in 2028.
