Each year, Dr. Michael Vitale, chief of pediatric spine surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian, chairs the Safety in Spine Surgery Summit along with co-chair Dr. Lawrence G. Lenke, MD, co-director and surgeon-in-chief at Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia. The goal of the summit is to gather leading spine experts to discuss ways to reduce the risk of harm to patients before, during, and after spine surgery. This year’s program focused on how to adapt emerging technologies to help improve outcomes, including best practice guidelines for the use of robotics in spine surgery. Congratulations to #NYP paramedics Davin McGloin and Michael Kremenizer, who were recently honored at the Regional Emergency Medical Services Council of New York City’s annual award ceremony. Davin was selected as the Advanced Life Support Provider of the Year for his contributions to paramedic care over his 50-year career, while Michael was recognized for his support and advocacy of organ and tissue donation with the Guardian of Life Award: EMS Donor Champion. When elite gymnast Olivia Kelly was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 16, she feared it would jeopardize her gymnastics career. But with the help of Dr. Benjamin Roye, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon with #OchSpine at #NYPMorganStanley, and Mary Miceli, a physical therapist at #NYPWestchester, Olivia was able to stop the 30-degree curve in her spine from progressing, wearing a brace and practicing the Schroth method, a scoliosis-specific therapy focused on spinal alignment through stretching, strengthening, and breathing exercises. “I’m so grateful to Dr. Roye and Mary,” says the 18-year-old from northern New Jersey. Today, Olivia looks forward to competing for Mizzou in the fall and pursuing her dream of representing Barbados at the Games in 2028.
