EDITORIAL | Untangle this police shooting: Why did Win Rozario, disturbed teen with scissors shot dead by NYPD cops, die? NYPD must release relevant body-worn camera footage and 911 call, redacted where necessary, to let the public see what actually unfolded. Rozario was Tased, charged at cops. Fam disputes. Some mental health cases need cops. Others need mental health professionals. NYPD is trained to deescalate. Did that happen?

(1) We should regulate guns, but there are so many goddamn guns that at this point it’s a logistical mess, and the Second Amendment is very sticky to people, especially in ideological times. (2) Mental health is broadly something we talk about, but don’t put any action towards. Most mental health professionals I’ve met are currently considering other jobs. A lot of them aren’t even screened or qualified to talk to children. It’s a logistical challenge, not a political one. You can pass all the legislation you want, but the pipeline of people who want to be mental health professionals (and go into the subsequent debt for not a massive salary) isn’t massive. (3) What we call a mass shooter is just semantic and ideological posturing that solves nothing.

Victims of abuse and trauma don’t even know what’s happening to them in the beginning, because of the manipulation, grooming, and predator behavior of their victimizer. Knowing signs is important: Grooming Techniques Conditioning the victim for abuse (or grooming) may include any of the following: * Establishing trust; * Favouritism/deprivation; * Isolation; * De-sensitising – violating boundaries gradually; * Sexualising environment; * Alcohol or other drugs; * Entangling child in wrongdoing (breaking rules and then agreeing to keep the activity a secret eg giving the child sweets before tea); * Emotional blackmail; * Creating secrets; * Denigration (that is, unfairly criticising or putting a person down); * Shifting blame (eg, sets victim up as a liar/trouble-maker); * Extortion, threats and violence; * Subverting relationships (that is, undermining the power/authority of an established relationship such as with parents); * Ensuring position of control and influence; * Promoting positive image of self and negative image of partner/child. * To break the bonds of trust with the child’s mother

This case highlights the serious nature of coercive control and its impact on victims. The man in question was jailed for 14 months for continually forcing his partner to prove her whereabouts and following her, which is a clear example of coercive and controlling behaviour. Such actions are not only invasive but also deeply damaging to the victim’s mental and emotional wellbeing.

In law enforcement, we wear bulletproof vests and carry guns and tasers to protect ourselves physically. But what do we wear to protect ourselves mentally? Unfortunately, there's very little training in that area. Consider this: an officer diagnosed with cancer can go to their department and request time off for chemotherapy without hesitation. However, when it comes to mental health issues, like dealing with the emotional toll of the job, officers often face a different response. The fear of looking weak, losing their job, or having their badge and gun taken away prevents many from seeking the help they need. This fear and stigma around mental health must change. We need to support our officers not just physically but mentally as well. Curious about strategies to help improve mental health and reduce trauma in law enforcement? Don't worry, you can still catch up! This Guardian article is less about the details of the crime and more about #bystanderintervention - about the choices we all have to make when seeing sexual harassment in public places , the quick mental risk assessments that help us decide what to do. Kindling Interventions and other trainings are based on the logic that we need spaces to practice these responses so that in the moment we feel more confident to act to try and prevent sexual violence.
