🚀 Boosting the development of 1,000,000 high performers by 2030 || Sharing lessons from 30 years of building, being on leading teams || Coach and former sub-4:00 miler || NOT interested in franchise opportunities 😎
A lesson you can learn from a rare display of high performance in two different sports.... Last night's Guardians-White Sox MLB game featured something that doesn't happen too often, a head-to-head stand off exchange of punches between two players over a disagreement. Jose Ramirez of the Guardians was attempting to stretch a single into a double. Shortstop Tim Anderson straddled second base awaiting the throw from the right fielder as Ramirez sped towards the base. Of course, Ramirez, in sliding to the bag, slid between Anderson's legs as the base was located there. It was not a cheap shot nor did he appear to come into the bag in a manner where he was targeting Anderson in an attempt to injure him. According to Ramirez (in post-game interviews), Anderson took exception to this slide and wanted to fight with Ramirez on the spot. Ramirez said that he had to defend himself and boy did he! The two squared off at second base while the benches cleared. A few punches were exchanged and then Ramirez threw a right hook that caught Anderson straight on the cheek and knocked him to the ground. It was the type of shot that would have made a boxing professional proud - see the clip below if you missed it last night. Both players (and many others) were ejected and Anderson even tried to come back on the field and re-engage in the scrum after he had been led away by his teammates. Anderson did not speak to the media after the game. He was also apparently warned by the umpires about taunting a White Sox rookie player earlier in the game. While I'm not here to advocate for fighting in sports (outside boxing or MMA), I do admire Ramirez's athletic ability on display. I have not seen a baseball player land a shot like that in many years. Also, if Ramirez's report is accurate, then Anderson needs to be ready if he's going to challenge another player after what was a normal, admittedly aggressive, baseball play. And in a bit of a sideways manner, it displays that having elite high-performance skills in more than one arena can pay off when you or your opponent least expects it. TAKEAWAY LESSON: Development pays off, even when you were not expecting to use that skill set in a given day or situation. #culture #motivation =========================== Are you interested in seeing content focused on #leadership, #personaldevelopment and #highperformance? Superstar Debut Cut Short: Injury Clouds Pelicans' Playoff Hopes A bittersweet night unfolded for the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday. Zion Williamson, in his much-anticipated playoff debut, delivered a dominant performance with 40 points and 11 rebounds. However, his efforts were overshadowed by a late-game injury that forced him to leave the court prematurely. Williamson's electrifying play kept the Pelicans in contention against the Los Angeles Lakers. His absence in the game's closing moments proved costly, leaving the team's playoff future uncertain. The coach acknowledged the significance of Williamson's performance, stating, "He was having a great game...leaving his imprint in all phases." The looming question remains: will Williamson be healthy enough to participate in the crucial play-in game against Sacramento on Friday? This injury comes after Williamson battled through a series of setbacks in his first four seasons. His resilience in overcoming past injuries and leading the Pelicans in scoring during a relatively healthy regular season adds to the disappointment surrounding this latest development. Veteran teammate Larry Nance Jr. emphasized Williamson's impact, stating, "He's shouldered us all season...hopefully he's healthy..." LeBron James echoed this sentiment, recognizing Williamson's talent and predicting his continued success. With the season hanging in the balance, the Pelicans can only hope for Williamson's swift recovery. His presence on the court will be critical if they aim to secure a playoff berth. Zion Williamson dominates in playoff debut but injury casts doubt on Pelicans' play-in chances. #NBAPlayoffs #Pelicans #Zion read more: follow the link https://lnkd.in/dAAH64qY

Why do lefty batters hit into fewer double plays? Of the 6.2 million pitches thrown in the last 9 seasons, 41.56% have been thrown to lefty batters and 58.44% have been thrown to righty batters. But of the 30,678 GIDPs (grounded into double plays), only 33.55% have been grounded into by lefties and 66.45% have being grounded into by righties. Therefore, lefties ground into an extremely significant 8.01% fewer double plays than one might expect based on the ratio of pitches faced. Why is this? And what does it mean for in-game strategy? #baseball #mlb Major League Baseball (MLB) https://lnkd.in/eRHZBHwc

Hi Josh, interesting analysis. I thought of a 3rd reason why lefties hit into fewer GIDPs. All second-basemen at the pro level (really high school level and up) are right-handed. Right-handed batters are more likely to pull ground balls to the left side of the infield as opposed to the right side. For lefties, the opposite is true. Therefore, in theory the 4-6-3 double play would take longer to turn than the 6-4-3 double play since they have to throw completely across their body. The shortstop's shoulders are already lined up. Similarly, the 3-6-3 double play would also take longer to turn than the 5-6-3, unless the 1B is left-handed which is somewhat common but still probably in the minority. I would be curious to see the percentage makeup of GIDPs by play type, e.g. 3-6-3, 4-6-3, 6-4-3, 5-6-3, with respect to LHBs vs RHBs and out rate. You could cluster all of the 3-6-3 and 3-6-1 GIDPs together (if the pitcher covers 1B). You could also cluster 6-3 (when the shortstop fields the ball and steps on 2B himself) with 6-4-3 and 4-3 with 4-6-3. I am using the conventional baseball scorekeeping terminology for these types of plays.
