In reference to my question last week, “What material is the largest contaminate in our recycling facility”, the answer is Plastic Bags. 🛍️ This may be a surprise to most of you as we see plastic bags everywhere, whether it is at our local supermarket or retail store. What makes them so problematic in our recycling facility? ♻️ 1. Tangling & Wrapping. Plastic Bags tend to wrap around our sorting equipment in our facility and have to be manually cut out by Penn Waste personnel, which also puts our employees at a safety risk. (Reminder 🚨: Safety is our #1 Priority)This can lead to mechanical issues and breakdowns, that disrupt the sorting process. The machinery is designed to handle larger and more ridged items, so the flexible and lightweight nature of plastic bags make them prone to tangling. 2. Manual Sorting Difficulty Plastic bags are very challenging to sort manually. These plastic bags are sorted on Table 1 of our recycling facility, coming directly from our tipping floor up a conveyor belt system. The bags are very thin and flexible making them hard to distinguish and handle effectively. 3. Contamination Plastic bags can easily trap and retain other marie rails such as food residue, liquids, or other small particles of glass or metal. This makes it challenging to recycle the bags themselves as they can contaminate other recyclable materials in the sorting process. Although plastic bags are problematic in our regular recycling bins, there are many alternative methods to ensure they are managed and disposed of properly. Here are some options. 1. Dispose of in your regular trash 2. Reuse - consider repurposing them for future shopping trips or household needs. 3. Store Drop Off Programs - many stores have specific drop off bins in their stores designated for plastic bag recycling. 4. Reduce the usage - consider using reusable shopping bags versus plastic. Here are our recycling guidelines below. I am currently working on incorporating them into my video, as mentioned in my LinkedIn Post last week! ♻️ I can’t wait to share the finished product!
Today is America Recycles Day! Below is a list of items you can recycle* in your curbside bin. As a reminder - please never place any item with a rechargeable battery in your curbside trash or recycling bins. Please help us keep our employees safe by properly disposing of rechargeable batteries. Please keep them out of recycling and rubbish bins to prevent incidents. Remember, it only takes a small spark to cause an incident. If you’re not sure what to do with gas canisters, check with your local authority first or take them to your nearest civic amenity site. #safetyfirst #recycling #sustainability #fireprevention #circulareconomy

Have a look at our article in the December issue of Skip and Waste Magazine to find out about the benefits that customers are seeing from the performance of our new BIG BITE JUNIOR REL demonstrator. There are obvious advantages in taking away the need for two separate vehicles to collect skips and wheeled bins, but BIG BITE JUNIOR is also demonstrating other operating efficiencies. Read our story on pages 56 and 57 of Skip and Waste Magazine, or find out more at [email protected] #wastemanagement #rearendloaders #compactiblewastecollection #carbon reduction
