Was talking with some folks re: sustainability in trucking and after unpacking all the pros / cons around everything from EV to Hydrogen to B100 to CNG and everything in between, the youngest, most inexperienced person in the group said: "the mile you don’t run is zero emission too". In other words, in addition to focusing on decarbonization technologies, we should also be thinking (investing) in solutions that solve for route / asset optimization / empty miles. Electrifying vehicles may be the one of the easiest ways to cut emissions for cars but can the same be said of freight vehicles? Transport is Australia’s third-largest and fastest-growing source of emissions and if nothing changes, it will be the biggest source of emissions by 2030. In the race to rapidly decarbonise freight vehicles, it’s important to identify the most efficient and cost-effective technology. New research lead by Professor of Urban Mobility, Hussein Dia aimed to do just that by evaluating the lifecycle emissions from electric and hydrogen trucks. "Electric and hydrogen trucks both have zero tailpipe emissions. However, we must consider their full lifecycle to assess overall carbon footprints. The production, use and recycling phases of the two kinds of trucks produce different emissions."
