Frankly, it beggars belief that there is even consideration to blur the sciences into some hodgepodge general subject at any stage past general introductory levels to infant and junior students. The sciences should be taught broad spectrum to all children regardless of future intention - if only because the scientific process is the best proven means by which to study and understand the reality in which we exist - and even the virtual realities we imagine and the potential ones we hypothesis over! Moreover, the fundamental joy of wonder and enquiry that is inherent and natural in children should be encouraged and guided from an early age and throughout life. So, I applaud this stand and would strongly support the ideology of ensuring that the foundational scientific disciplines of biology, chemistry, physics/mathematics are taught by specific discipline professionals and studied by everyone as distinct modules at least up to 16. The level of that study can be tailored to demonstrated individual capacity and, clearly, the integrated route can be a backstop for those struggling - such that everyone in society has at the minimum a general grasp of what science is and means, and how the world works - and how we explore those workings. If we squander the opportunity to equip our youth with an empirical understanding of life and physical and chemical reality, over an age range in which their capacity to acquire and absorb and digest that understanding is at its height; we are setting ourselves up for a future of enslaved idiocy and dogmatism ruled by an unelected, but opportunistically self selected “elite”.
RSB supports Qualifications Wales / Cymwysterau Cymru's decision to delay the introduction of The Sciences GCSE, and looks forward to working further with Qualifications Wales and WJEC / CBAC in developing the new qualification.
