As odd as it may sound, “Chief Clinical Officer” was once a very safe job for me. I was insulated to a degree by the impact of my decisions. I could live and work in a theoretical world, as we planned for and talked about the ideal. I didn’t oversee the services that were happening in the field; that was the Chief Operating Officer’s job…I oversaw the initiatives that could improve those services, which meant I had less direct impact and accountability. Accountability is just different when you’re several layers removed from the application and impact. It was easy to blame and point fingers as to why the work wasn't successful. But after a while, I had a moment of reckoning; I just wasn’t satisfied working within this bubble of protection, lack of accountability, and, more importantly, lack of impact. Since that moment of realization, I’ve taken on more responsibility…including accepting failure. We shifted our organization to a Dyad Model, in which I am now ultimately responsible for the services provided and, just as important, the people providing them. Theoretical is less of a conversation, and pragmatism is at the heart of our decisions. It’s less about “should it work” and more about “is it working”. The feedback feels more real and necessary. The responsibility to serve people versus ideas is ever-present. And I’m bringing my team along with me, and they bring me along too. We are outside the harbor, where the waters are rougher, and the course isn’t always straight. If you feel safe, you’re probably not making any meaningful difference to anyone anyhow. Let’s take the risk, accept the chance of failure, and proceed courageously. Brené Brown said it best: “If we are brave enough often enough, we will fall; this is the physics of vulnerability.”

✨️✨️✨️She was ahead of her time in this profession✨️✨️✨️... ✍️Florence Nightingale's quote, "I think one's feelings waste themselves in words; they ought to be distilled into actions which bring results," caught my eye while reading the Nurse Preceptor Program Builder by Diana Swihart. It was enlightening to understand why this was placed at the top of the Orientation and Competency chapter. The idea of transforming feelings into actions aligns closely with competency-based orientation and assessment for several reasons: 1. Action-Oriented: It emphasizes the practical application of skills, moving beyond mere discussion. 2. Measurable Outcomes: It focuses on achieving tangible results and meeting performance standards. 3. Continuous Improvement: It encourages ongoing development through consistent practice. 4. Feedback and Adaptation: It involves regular feedback and adjustments to foster growth. Both the quote and competency-based approaches advocate for meaningful actions over mere words, aiming for specific, measurable results. Florence was indeed ahead of her time in this profession!!

I have been with SCA for five months; previously, I was at a medical practice for 13 years. The Business Office Manager at SCA surgery centers has the unique role of managing people, financials and business operations. My background of working with surgeons for over 20 years and my education have prepared me to succeed in this role. Why did you join the TRUST & what is your role? I joined the TRUST in 2022 as a graduate student. I heard about the TRUST from a fellow Bethel student and TRUST member. I was searching for mentorship, and positive female role models, which was an area that I was struggling with at the time. The TRUST members embraced me and I felt at home instantly. I was recently offered a seat on the Associate Board. I have experience serving on the Strategic Growth & Marketing Committee, and now serve on the Sponsorship Committee. What is the best career advice you’ve received or the best mentoring experience you’ve had? Be open to feedback but remember that not all feedback is created equally. Always remember to take time to think about feedback before reacting. The Hill Dickinson LLP Award for Excellence in OD is looking for an OD or L&D initiative or project that has significantly benefitted the organisation through improved effectiveness or viability. Your entry should demonstrate exceptional teamwork and innovative and/or unique approaches to addressing key business goals. The judges will be looking for: • An innovative strategy that addresses an important business need. • A narrative that illustrates how the strategy was implemented and the journey from implementation to success. • Evidence of good leadership skills and excellent team working. • Evaluation of return on investment and success in terms of how it has met its learning objectives and demonstrated a positive impact on the organisation and patient care – please use metrics, anecdotes and case studies. Judges will look for evidence of impact and how this is evaluated. • Thorough evaluation of impact of project, with identifiable lessons learnt.
