I’ve been thinking about authenticity v. conformity lately, finding inspiration in amusing places. Most recently, The Devil Wears Prada. As I flipped through the channels after another long day of travel, I landed on the scene where Miranda Priestly is scolding Andrea “Andy” Sachs, saying she took a chance on the “smart, fat girl” (Andy Sachs is a size 6 played by Anne Hathaway). It is apparent that Miranda tried hiring someone different from the typical employee at Runway Magazine. The lambasting causes Andy to conform to a culture that is not aligned with her authentic self, creating all sorts of issues in her personal life. By the end of the movie, Andy decides to leave Runway because of what conforming to a toxic work environment has cost her. So why am I talking about this movie? That is simple. If you hire a diverse workforce, you must let them be authentic! Do not waste their time, or your own, by not taking advantage of the unique perspectives and diversity of thought you have available. And to those looking for their next role, do not modify who you are to get a job. If you don’t think an organization will want your authenticity, then it is not the right role! There is so much to gain when we approach problems with unique points of view. Be authentic. Be professional. Be honest. #authenticity #diversityofthought #selfawareness
