Serving up strategic cold-cuts in a world of lukewarm hot-takes / Strategy @ Quality Meats Creative:
"What is creativity?" - That's the most elementary question we can ask about what we do. We have creative assets made by creative departments working in creative agencies. We give out creative awards, write creative briefs, and sit in creative presentations... ... and we do all of that without a simple, conversational, widely accepted, understanding of what 'Creativity' even is. Without that shared definition to point at: We can't properly discuss it, We can't challenge people who claim to know it, and we can't really say when its good or bad. ...and who benefits most from this? The people slapping the Creativity label onto whatever old tosh they can get away with selling. Here's how I defined it in a training deck for the intern intake, it might be TOO simple, but it's enough of a start to begin asking the more important questions - like 'What is good creative?'

It’s 2020. Here we see a fresh grad stuck at home in a pandemic, trying something cool. Getting to the point, of revisiting this video in a time when it is more relevant than ever. Reflecting upon the path on which the industry has evolved over the period of half a decade, here’s a few of points to shine light on. 🧳 Design Portfolios - The time of massive compilations is long gone. Time is always more valuable today than it was yesterday. And with that , your window of grabbing someone’s attention becomes narrower and narrower. Practice in mass quantity and learn to showcase it in as little as possible. Think of your body of work as a movie and focus on creating a kickass teaser for it ✍🏽 Design skills - Skills speak well when paired with complimentary skills. Get onto photo and video editing tools. Learn how to make compelling presentations. Speak confidently in a room full of knowledgeable people. Post an article with your thoughts and get peoples inputs. Your soft skills are your guns, your hard skills are your ammo. 📱 Consistent documentation - You need to be present daily to keep up with a rapidly growing industry. Opportunities are born everyday, to be able to grab them you need to be upto date with the new tools and trends. Be fearless in putting your experiments out in the world. Use platforms like Instagram, Behance and LinkedIn. It’s a great time to create a living portfolio that grows and betters itself everyday. It’s #twocenttuesdays

Reflecting on a year with Open Doors, I've gained insights that mirror the job hunt perfectly: - Not every idea sticks. Learn to pivot fast. - Embrace tasks that don't scale, weighing their cost against their value. - Juggling too much dilutes focus. Zero in on what promises the most and drop the dead weight. - Time is gold. Guard it fiercely, and learn the power of "no" when things don't serve your mission. - Progress is progress, no matter the size of the step. This year also brought a closer look at the uphill battle many juniors face in scoring that first role. The game's gotten tougher, no doubt. But the grit and grind I've seen? Unmatched. And it pays off—they land the gigs that felt miles away, proving persistence is king. Here's to another year of opening doors and fostering success. PS. If you like to be part of this journey and learn more about what it takes to land that first role, consider my newsletter - a weekly breakdown of one topic aiming to help junior designers land their first role and tons of junior design jobs in the US, UK and EU. STOP ASKING FOR UNNECESSARY COLLEGE DEGREES!!! I've run into so many job listings where 'Bachelors' or 'Masters' degrees are thrown as required, and I can tell from the description of the company and/or the way the job listing is written that such a degree is not necessary and should not be a 'hard no' to anyone without such a degree who is otherwise VERY qualified for the position. Imagine this - it's 1997, and you are a newly minted head of a movie studio. You have a BLOCKBUSTER script that you want to turn into a summer sensation. Now you have three directors, and you're looking at their resumes. First thing - eliminate everyone who doesn't have at least a Bachelors degree on their resume. One doesn't have the degree - so off he goes. Of the other two, one has a Bachelors, one has a Masters! Well ain't that handy! Your job is DONE. You just pick the Masters, and it's a cinch you'll have the biggest movie in town! You just hired Corbun J. Perrywinkle Jr, and he has a Masters, so you're in! Except - the dude with no degree at all - was Steven Spielberg. Yeah, as of 1997, Spielberg had NO degree in filmmaking. Not even an Associates. BUT - he had the talent. So you've just written off your summer blockbuster because your newhire had to have the word 'Bachelors' on their resume. Look beyond the simple check boxes. Evaluate the person. Call and talk for 5 minutes, see what you get. I'm an Instructional Designer and a Technical Trainer with experience in multiple industries and in some cases, wicked skills in learning highly complex information to put in the blockbuster training videos that I create. And I put my heart and soul into writing scripts for MY videos. Because that's what Steven Spielberg told me to do when I met him. In 1997. Before even HE had a Bachelor's degree.
