If we can turn hope into action, we can change the world. Last week, I had the joy of watching FOR LOVE & LIFE, the fiercely inspiring story of I AM ALS founders and activists Brian Wallach and Sandra Abrevaya’s fight to improve the lives of those suffering from ALS. Reeling in the wake of Brian’s diagnosis, the couple steps into their uncertain future with awe-inspiring determination to make a difference: to fix a broken system, democratize access to neurological care, and leave the world better than they found it -- for ALS patients and for all of us. From unlocking ONE BILLION dollars in new federal funding, to building a patient led-community of tens of thousands, their work at I AM ALS is irrefutable proof that when people and purpose come together, we have the power to shape our world. As our mutual friend Louise Langheier puts perfectly, Brian and Sandra are “Literally forces of nature.” FOR LIFE & LOVE is streaming on Amazon Prime and I encourage everyone to watch it and to join the I AM ALS movement. 1 in 300 people will receive an ALS diagnosis at some point in their lives. Currently, it is 100% fatal.  This story will give you hope that it won’t be for long. #ThisIsLeadership

💫This weekend, I was invited to be on a panel again ( yes, my second time this month 🙌) which I love love doing aside from training/facilitation :) I was asked a question that goes something like this, “ How do you handle PAIN in life?” There are so many variables and reasons as to why we are experiencing pain and suffering in life. Either a pain of lost like losing a job or losing someone that you love, and many more. As I thought this through, it always comes down to what we are experiencing is always temporary. Yes, we need to experience something in life ( sometimes drastic) that can help us to make our selves stronger than before. It builds you up as a person. I have experience both PAIN: 👉I was layoff from a job during Covid that now leads me to owning my own coaching/ training/speaking business. 👉I’ve lost both my parents at the young age of 22 years old and became a guardian for my brother. This lead me to become ( or striving to be) a good parent. My advice is, when you are experiencing something like this take a pause and reflect and asked this question, “what this experience is trying to teach me?” Use this experience as your foundation and prepare you for the next steps in life. Expect that life is not always full of suffering. There will be joy, peace, and happiness as well. As Temi Bolaji-Jegede shared and learned from my previous presentation were I addressed there is mountains, hills, and valleys in life.. ( Thanks Temi!) When patients or their loved ones reach out to express their gratitude for the support we offer and how it has made a difference, it fills me with empowerment and joy. My aspiration is to keep making a positive impact in our patients' lives, and I'm committed to raising awareness about dysphagia every step of the way.” If you could tell future audiologists/SLPs/CSD professionals one thing, what would it be? “Don't be afraid try. Pursue that ‘reach’ goal. Learn a new therapy strategy. Keep growing. Stay curious. Ask the questions. Step outside of your comfort zone. We will never know our maximum potential if we don't continue to strive for ‘more.’ And lastly, ‘Do what you love, and love what you do!’” What does being an innovator in the CSD field mean to you? “In this young and ever-evolving field, we need more innovators to move it forward. For me, being an innovator is a commitment to make a difference for our profession, for the upcoming generations of SLPs, and for our patients and clients. Wow, 2023! The year of the firsts. - Appointed Co-Chair of the U.K. Dementia Mission, to take-up my FIRST ever UK GOV position. A tremendous honour, at a moment when the FIRST disease modifying therapies for Alzheimer’s disease - and major breakthroughs in scalable and practical predictors, diagnostics and biomarkers - are becoming a reality. - FIRST career move in nearly a decade (!): to do something completely different to anything I have done before: build Novo Nordisk’s FIRST ever Transformational Prevention Unit: a new R&D and Commercial organisation to deliver solutions that predict and pre-empt obesity and its consequences. - FIRST time being colleague #1 of a new organisation, FIRST time reporting to a Board, and FIRST experience of a totally different (and unique) corporate culture. - FIRST time all three mini Sarwars waved goodbye from the other side of a school gate. 2024: you’ve got some big shoes to fill, but some pretty special (and memorable) foundations to build upon…

I'm thrilled to announce that I have joined the Journeys Metabolic team! I've said for many years that I am on a mission to "change the weight of the world." As part of this mission, I founded Heartland Weight Loss; the first insurance-based Obesity Medicine clinic in the Greater Kansas City area. Over the past five years, we have seen phenomenal growth, primarily driven by referrals from amazing clinicians in the area. In 2022, I opened a second location in Lawrence, Kansas (hiring Maribeth Orr, D.O., DABFM, DABOM to anchor that space). Again - success. The world clearly needs (and wants) brick-and-mortar Obesity Medicine clinics! However, scaling an in-person model bigger and bigger simply isn't my cup of tea - nor is it an effective way to bring evidence-based therapies to the masses. With the recent explosion of interest in this field, I have had multiple offers to partner with technology companies. I've never been opposed to the idea - it's a great way to effectively disseminate ten years of knowledge/experience to a bigger audience. Sadly, most of these tech startups are on a mission to either capitalize upon prescribing GLP-1 agonists to as many people as possible and/or promote the outdated, unscientific narrative of "eat-less, move-more" combined with some sort of motivational tool to help people embrace the misery that narrative creates. When I was approached by Journeys Metabolic and dug into their product, it was immediately clear that the leadership of this company gets it. The entire mission of the program is to help patients with metabolic health by focusing on repairing the underlying pathology that happens upstream (at the cellular level), which will inevitably have an impact downstream - improving all sorts of cardiometabolic diseases - including obesity. With a mission grounded in people and results (NOT prescriptions and profits) and a leadership team passionate about metabolic health, I couldn't NOT be a part of this company! I believe Journeys has what it takes to turn this epidemic of chronic disease around - at scale. I'm excited to see what happens as we explode into the marketplace in 2024!

Was an action-packed (and short) trip to LA for ViVE! Highlights included connecting with old friends, meeting new ones, and watching Dr Amy Schuerman-Gen on stage. I'm not into the over-the-top production of conferences, but I love the opportunity to connect with people in-person. Lots of great learnings, including: - '23 was a tough year to sell. Companies need to continue to manage burn, focus on strategic opportunities, and get to profitability before they gear up for their next raise. - AI / data continue to be hot areas for innovation. Will be great to continue to see defensible competitive differentiation, thoughtful workflow integration, and focus on ROI. - VBC is tough. Even for scale players, a focus on physician collaboration, patient outcomes, and unit economics is key to success and the market continues to evolve with new challenges / opportunities. - meeting people in-person really beats virtual calls... I love remote/hybrid work, but value the in-person connections that go deeper than you could ever do virtually. Especially when you can do that over good food.
