AI in Wildlife Conservation Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing wildlife conservation efforts by providing innovative tools to monitor and protect endangered species. AI-powered camera traps and drones capture images and videos, which are analyzed using AI algorithms to identify species and track movements. For instance, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) uses AI to analyze images from camera traps, helping to protect tigers and rhinos from poaching. AI systems are also employed to predict and prevent poaching activities. By analyzing data from sensors and cameras, AI can identify patterns indicative of illegal activities. The SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) partnership, which includes organizations like WWF and Wildlife Conservation Society, leverages AI to enhance anti-poaching patrols, leading to a significant reduction in illegal hunting. Additionally, AI helps in habitat restoration by monitoring environmental changes and providing data for conservation planning. This technology enables conservationists to make informed decisions, ensuring the protection and sustainability of wildlife ecosystems. #AI #WildlifeConservation #TechnologyForGood #EndangeredSpecies #Innovation #Sustainability #TechForGood #WWF #SMART

Introducing... 🦏 Noctua's Mission in Short On average, poachers kill 96 African elephants and two rhinos every day. Wildlife reserves struggle with managing poaching and monitoring animal populations due to the lack of sufficient surveillance solutions. Our project plans to tackle this problem by developing a silent, long-endurance drone that can autonomously and unobtrusively monitor large areas, supporting rangers in preserving wildlife. 🌍 Poaching in Vast, Remote Game Parks According to the #SavetheRhinoFoundation, Kruger National Park in South Africa has witnessed a 59% decline in the rhino population since 2013, emphasizing the urgent need for solutions. The primary challenge faced by wildlife reserves is the ability to monitor these vast, remote game parks. For instance, despite having more than 600 rangers on patrol in #KrugerNationalPark, only a fraction of the required area is covered. 🚁 Enter Drones: The Rangers' Silent Eye In the Sky Covering large pieces of land during day and night and #detecting #poachers during low visibility situations by combining visual and thermal cameras are huge advantages that make aerial drones effective and helpful for rangers. 🍃 Being Silent and Long-Endurance Capabilities The drone must operate silently to avoid detection by both wildlife and poachers. Noise disturbance can cause distress to wildlife, which may subsequently lead to an increased number of fallen game, damaged forests due to animal agitation, or the migration of animals. The drone must also have long-endurance and long-range capabilities to effectively complete its mission in these vast areas. Attributes that are currently not available to the rangers in this combination. 🦉 Nature's Silent Eye in the Sky - For a future where wildlife can thrive Let's create a future where technology and wildlife conservation unite. If you would like to support our #ETH #focusproject in any way, please contact our Project Lead Alfonso Maculan. Your support is vital as we strive to engineer a system that could empower rangers, protect endangered species, and help preserve the biodiversity of our planet. #Noctua #ConservationInnovation #WildlifeProtection #dmavt #eth #drones

Leveraging drones, spatial data, and storytelling to advance global health, environmental, and humanitarian efforts.
The first step for wildlife conservation is locating and tracking individuals to understand both individual and population behavior and dynamics. Scientists have used radio-tracking methods since the 1960s to help with this process. But, how exactly does radio-tracking work, and how can drones help? With conventional radio-tracking, individuals are captured and tagged with a radio transmitter, which transmits radio signals. Scientists then can take to the field with a radio receiver, which beeps louder and louder the closer the receiver is to the transmitter. One of the drawbacks of conventional radio-tracking is that scientists need to be in relatively close proximity to the radio transmitter to determine the animal’s location. That’s why drone radio-telemetry is a huge advance for wildlife conservation. Wildlife Drones , an Australian drone company focused on animal tracking, has developed a radio-telemetry system that allows a specialized sensor to track animal tag signals from a drone. This system means that in one flight, the sensor can detect up to 40 tagged animals within range. While conventional radio-tracking required sending people out to rugged or remote places to track down tagged individuals, drone radio-telemetry saves both time and money. Additionally, the drone data can be mapped real-time, even when offline, and is compatible with all very-high frequency radio transmitters. Recently, Wildlife Drones partnered with Save Vietnam's Wildlife to protect the pangolin, which is the world’s most trafficked mammal. SVW’s conservation practices involve rescuing and releasing pangolins into wildlife reserves. However, it can be difficult to monitor the post-release survival of the animals they release, as pangolins can live in rugged and remote terrain. With drone radio-telemetry, SVW can track multiple animals and better understand the successes and challenges of their methods.
