The Australian Government is providing $65 million to investigate and progress planning for South Australia’s Northern Water – delivering desalinated water to support renewable industries and development of critical mineral resources in South Australia, as part of a Future Made in Australia. Early analysis shows that this project has potential to unlock $5 billion in investment and lift South Australia’s gross domestic product by $150 billion over its lifetime to 2053, creating 4,200 jobs in resources, renewables and the net zero transformation on average each year. If the final business case finds that the project is feasible and the project goes ahead, this plant and this pipeline could deliver the water required to process and refine critical minerals, and produce renewable green hydrogen essential to build a green metals industry in the Upper Spencer Gulf, supported by South Australia’s cleaner and cheaper energy. Studying the polycrisis & metacrisis at the intersection of energy, ecology, and economics to better understand risk and resilience.
Some pertinent exerpts below: "Compared to some other forms of industrial development, renewable power plant projects have well-understood and relatively contained reclamation risks," it says. "The risks associated with groundwater and off-site contamination are generally low." "From 2019 to 2021, the largest driver of agricultural land loss was expansion of pipelines and industrial sites," it says. "Other key drivers… include urban residential development, mines and wells, and roads." "Existing power plant reclamation requirements are sufficiently defined to ensure effective reclamation, but no timing trigger exists to initiate reclamation," it says. “Martin Olszynski, a resource law professor at the University of Calgary, said the report dismantles the government's expressed concerns about the booming growth of renewable power in the province.” "It's an evidence- and reason-based wrecking ball that smashes the government's talking points and policies with respect to renewables," he said. https://lnkd.in/gfQW_95V #Energy #Electricity #Alberta #AlbertaEnergy

Oil and gas producer Strathcona Resources Ltd. has announced a unique oilsands carbon-capture deal with the Canada Growth Fund (CGF) worth up to $2 billion, which will result in the carbon being captured and stored at its production sites. Calgary-based Strathcona and public investment vehicle CGF will both invest up to $1 billion into Strathcona's steam-assisted gravity drainage oil sands facilities in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Strathcona will build, own and operate the carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure. The CCS equipment will put a large dent into Strathcona’s CO2 emissions, the company says. The project to be developed in partnership with CGF is projected to capture up to two million tonnes of CO2 per year; Strathcona currently produces approximately three million tonnes of CO2 per year from its oil production. #carboncapture #CCS #carbon #oilandgas https://lnkd.in/e9A_fcZk

Engineering Management & MBA: UTS | Sustainability | Industrial and Business Analyst| Mechanical Engineer
The NSW government is striving to reduce to just one power station within nine years. Yet, a complex, sluggish, and exorbitantly priced approval process looms large, threatening to create a 'reliability gap.' #Stephanie_Bashir, CEO of Nexa Advisory , paints a stark picture: in NSW, the approval process crawls at 2-3 times the speed of other states, extending project timelines by 4-7 years and costing developers 25 times more than in Queensland. Imagine this—a 1.5GW project in NSW attracts application fees of $4.5 million, a staggering 150 times higher than in Queensland. These procedural quagmires have already compelled the NSW government to shell out $450 million to Origin Energy to meet future energy demands. The delays in project assessments could further undermine federal climate commitments, with 84 projects stuck in the pipeline spanning solar, wind, and battery storage. My perspective is that the federal government must expedite the 2-3 year project assessment process, ensuring that while optimization occurs, the integrity of robust checkpoints and evaluations remains uncompromised. Streamlining these operations is vital for achieving our energy and climate objectives. Ameresco, a cleantech integrator specializing in energy efficiency and renewable energy, has received a contract to design, engineer, and implement energy upgrades across 124 buildings covering 4.6 million sq ft at Canadian Forces Base in Edmonton, Canada. The contract includes installing LED lighting, boiler plant and heating system upgrades, converting fuel sources from natural gas to electric heat pump systems, upgrading electrical distribution systems, and installing a geothermal ground source heat pump system. Additionally, the project will replace natural gas clothes dryers with ventless heat pump dryers, install water conservation measures, and upgrade building envelopes to be more energy efficient. The improvements are designed to save over $2 million in energy costs annually and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 27%. Over the next two years, the project is expected to create 125 new jobs in the Edmonton area. In 2022, Ameresco commenced a comprehensive project evaluation, which included completing audits, developing energy-saving measures, and a subsequent feasibility study. The multi-phased project is in the design stage and is projected to extend through 2024 and into early 2025. To initiate project implementation, fast-tracked measures will involve simultaneously replacing 10 boilers across 5 buildings and initiating LED lighting upgrades in 110 buildings in Summer 2024. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. This week, the Alberta government will lift its finger from the pause button and restart renewable-energy project approvals. It has been seven months since this announcement surprised the entire industry. Back in August, we at the Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) were already engaged in many productive conversations in Alberta, related to land use, reclamation security, agricultural practices and the role of municipal governments in renewable-energy project development, the main issues cited by the government as the reasons behind this pause. #renewableenergy #economy #ghgemissions #sustainableenergy https://lnkd.in/gxjNRYyA
Opinion: After a long pause, it's time to press play on Alberta's renewable energy
