A bitt, often referred to simply as a "cleat" serves as a pivotal component in anchoring a ship securely. It is essentially a loop or ring-shaped fixture firmly attached to the deck of the vessel. When dropping anchor, the chain or rope attached to the anchor is passed through the bitt, providing a stable point of attachment. This mechanism allows the ship to be anchored firmly in place, resisting the forces of wind and currents. By securing the anchor to the bitt, the ship remains stationary, maintaining its desired position and ensuring the safety and stability of the vessel. #vdengetechnology #didyouknow #shipbuilding #shiprepair #drycargovessel #oilchemicaltanker #supplyvessel #sea #ocean #marine #maritime #seatransport #bitt #vessel #ship

It is great to be featured in the latest edition of GUH (p12) reminding companies bidding for international contracts to think about corporation tax implications when installing or maintaining machinery outside the UK. It is much easier to manage risks around creating a taxable presence upfront, rather than dealing with historic enquiries from tax authorities a few years down the line.
The latest edition of the GUH News magazine is out now. With the theme of ‘Seizing Global Opportunities’, it includes features from Fugro, Soil Machine Dynamics Ltd and KOSO Kent Introl Ltd, alongside the latest news from across the underwater industry. Read the magazine online at https://lnkd.in/ewXxi9DP, or pick up a copy of the print edition from our stand, 3H31, at SPE Offshore Europe in Aberdeen this week. #GlobalUnderwaterHub #GUHNews #OE23 #50yearsofOE

On this day in 1980, the semi sub drilling rig Alexander Kielland capsized in the Ekofisk field killing 123 of its crew. The rig was stationed 320km east of Dundee and originally designed as a flotel providing accommodation for up to 386. At the time of the disaster, was stationed alongside the Edda production platform. At around 18:30 when around 200 of the crew were in the mess, they felt a 'sharp crack' followed by 'some kind of trembling'. The vessel suddenly listed then temporarily stabilised. At this point, 5 of the 6 anchor cables had broken, and by 18:53, the list continued and the final cable snapped, capsizing the rig. Of the seven 50-man lifeboats and twenty 20-man rafts, only 5 lifeboats and 2 rafts were successfully deployed. Two 12-man rafts were thrown from Edda, survivors men were taken from the sea by supply boats, and some were able to swam to Edda. The standby vessel Silver Pit took an hour to reach the scene and was unable to rescue anyone from the sea. The investigation in March 1981 concluded that the capsize was due to a fatigue crack in one of the 6 bracings. Specifically, a small 6mm fillet weld which joined a non-load-bearing flange plate to the bracing. While the failure had developed over time, improper work during the construction in 1976 was the initiating event, supported by the failure of major structural elements which failed in sequence, destabilising the entire structure due to the absence of structural redundancy. The vessel was recovered in 1983 at the third attempt and the rig taken to the Nedstrand Fjord after the recovery efforts had been completed. In response to this disaster, North Sea offshore installations revaluated their incident command organisation, identifying a clear authority who would order abandonment in case of emergency. On the night of the 27th March, there was window between the initial crack and the eventual capsize through which the majority of the crew could have escaped with an effective emergency response protocol. The failure to successfully deploy lifeboats led to the International Maritime Organisation issuing a requirement for all lifeboats on merchant ships to be fitted with hooks that could be released even when they were under load. 📸Aftenposten.no #industrialdisaster #oilandgas #alexanderkielland

How do we keep an oil rig steady in a stormy sea?🌊 This question might seem like a puzzle, but we have the solution. Watch our time-lapse where a team on an anchor handling tug tackles incredibly heavy-duty work. They maneuver anchors weighing 12 tons each to securely anchor the platform. These anchors aren't just heavy; they're designed to withstand forces up to 500-600 tons, preventing the platform from moving even in the strongest storms. #offshore #shipping #maritime #oilandgas #marine #northsea #ahts #northsea

This Sub-Bottom Profiler data was acquired in depths of 130m showing the ability of the Innomar Medium on the USV to penetrate 12.8m in this example. This data allows us to understand the geology of the sub-seabed and is used for planning offshore asset projects such as export cable routes.
