TL:DR Good/corrected vision has a huge impact on overall health, but often is 'overlooked' as a public health problem. A 2016 online poll revealed that 88% of respondents identified good vision as crucial for overall health, and 47% believe losing vision would have the greatest impact on their daily lives compared to losing a limb, memory, hearing, or speech. Despite this, many people still face undiagnosed or untreated vision issues. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services supports programs like the CDC's Vision Health Initiative and the National Eye Institute's National Eye Health Education Program to address vision health, but eye health remains a low national priority, even amidst chronic disease prevention efforts. The lack of a clear and consistent definition for Long COVID presents challenges for patients, clinicians, public health practitioners, researchers, and policymakers. Our new report presents a new definition for Long COVID — that it is an infection-associated chronic condition that occurs after COVID-19 infection and is present for at least three months as a continuous, relapsing and remitting, or progressive disease state that affects one or more organ systems. “Our committee hopes this single definition, crafted with input from across research and patient communities, will help to educate the public about this widespread and highly consequential disease state," said Harvey Fineberg, chair of the authoring committee. I suggest reading a great article by our friend and Board Member, David Hoffman. Recent international and national efforts have highlighted the public health importance of Alzheimer’s disease, emphasizing the urgent need for aggressive action. In January 2011, President Obama signed the National Alzheimer’s Project Act into law, establishing a National Advisory Council on Alzheimer’s Disease Research, Care, and Services. This led to the creation of the first National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease in 2012. The Department of Health and Human Services publishes a new National Plan each year. In a collaborative effort with national and state partners, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been instrumental in developing public health road maps. Notably, the 2013 Road Map focused on state and local actions in the United States. It's of utmost importance that we continue to create and update these public health road maps. As Hoffman points out, these road maps are crucial in addressing key challenges in the fight against Alzheimer's disease, such as caregiver support and education, early detection and comprehensive planning, professional and provider education, and public awareness. Last week, Governor Healey signed An Act to improve quality and oversight of long-term care. We are grateful to the legislature for their dedication to passing this bill during this legislative session and especially want to thank Chairman Tom Stanley, Senator Pat Jehlen, and their staff for their continued advocacy for long-term care improvements over the past few years. We are proud to have worked with the legislature over the last few years to advocate the need for changes in long-term care and to strengthen the workforce that cares for our families. The new law will place added oversight and licensing recommendations on long-term care facilities, require them to develop their own infection outbreak response plans, and work to bolster the long-term care industry's workforce. The bill also includes policies to prevent social isolation, with special consideration for residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia. These policies are a direct result of the experiences of families and residents, many who were living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, during the COVID lockdowns in long-term care facilities.
