Racial discrimination is embedded in our aquatic history. It significantly limited access to swimming pools for people of color, creating generational gaps in swimming skills and comfort around water. In King County, Blacks represent 6% of the population yet 15% of drowning deaths in the past 5 years. Everyone deserves the opportunity to safely enjoy the water. Our region has limited access to public pools and essential water safety programs. It has been only 23 years since #MLKDay was celebrated in all US states. An effort that began back in 1968. Our regional history of public pools in King County, dedicated to honoring Martin Luther King, calls us to our mission.
