According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 27% of the US population (more than one in four people) has some kind of disability. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), disability has three dimensions: 1. Impairment in a person’s body structure or function or mental functioning; examples of impairments include loss of a limb, loss of vision, or memory loss. 2. Activity limitation, such as difficulty seeing, hearing, walking, or problem solving. 3. Participation restrictions in normal daily activities, such as working, engaging in social and recreational activities, and obtaining health care and preventive services. #JustOut! The World Health Organization (WHO) has released the first-ever policy brief on #TB-associated disability. The policy brief builds on the increasing evidence in recent years on the unaddressed needs of people with TB who experience impairments and disabilities during TB treatment as well as after completing treatment. It presents WHO’s current perspective on TB-associated impairments and disabilities and highlights the need to protect human rights with holistic people-centered services for people with TB to improve their health-related quality of life and well-being. The planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of impairment and disability-inclusive TB services must be prioritized to ensure an integrated people-centred approach towards ending TB, a key pillar of the End TB Strategy. This policy brief presents to member states and key stakeholders the comprehensive policy response needed for the prevention, treatment, and management of impairments and disabilities that occur during TB treatment and which may need to continue after completing treatment. https://lnkd.in/dtFj6jWq

The CDC estimates there were 139.8 million emergency room visits in 2021. The costs of a visit to the ER can vary widely, but these unexpected expenses can be devastating, especially for people with disabilities and older adults who have lower incomes and often have other disability- or age-related medical expenses. According to NCI-AD ACS data from 2022-23: • 2 out of every 5 respondents had gone to the emergency room for any reason in the past 12 months. • Almost one-third of respondents had an overnight stay in a hospital in the past 12 months. At the same time, we see high rates of people reporting they are able to access primary care services, such as annual check-ups and mental health services. These high rates of health care utilization among NCI-AD ACS respondents emphasize the importance of having high quality data on disability, so our systems can appropriately monitor the use and quality of health care for people with disabilities and non-disabled peers.
