According to the California Hospital Association, 44 of California’s 58 counties lack child or adolescent psychiatric beds. While this crisis is not exclusive to California—or even the US—behavioral health facilities focused on children and adolescents, like Montage Health's Ohana Campus in Monterey, CA, lead the charge to address the mental health epidemic amongst kids and teens. Informed by neuroscience research from NBBJ Fellow and developmental molecular biologist Dr. John Medina, Ohana prioritizes the importance of nature in modern healthcare, with fresh air, daylight, greenery and organic forms and materials to lower stress and encourage movement. The campus also features art by over 160 artists, curated in collaboration with Weston Collective. The title of this presentation ("Perspectives on Financing Strategies for Evidence-Based Treatment Implementation in Youth Mental Health Systems") is also the title of a paper I recently published in The Journal of Mental Health Policy and Economics with my colleagues at RAND and the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center!
Last September graduate student Maddison North presented at the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) conference in Seattle. Her presentation was titled, “Perspectives on Financing Strategies for Evidence-Based Treatment Implementation in Youth Mental Health Systems.” This was part of a symposium titled, “Fiscal, Organizational, and End-User Considerations for Improving Use of Evidence in Large Scale Healthcare Systems”

Vermont is on the cusp of a promising shift in mental health care, initiated by a 6–0 vote from the Senate Appropriations Committee to explore the potential of psychedelic-assisted therapy. ✨🍄🔍 This endorsement paved the way for the Bill’s passage in the Senate, signaling a strong legislative interest in advancing psychedelic therapy. 🍄 The bill aims to establish a Psychedelic Therapy Advisory Working Group, which will be responsible for evaluating the potential for regulated access to psychedelics in a therapeutic setting. 🏛️ This group will focus on developing recommendations for how healthcare providers can legally administer psychedelics safely while evaluating the overall impact on public health. Collaborating with leading institutions like The Johns Hopkins University, the Vermont Psychological Association, and the Vermont Psychiatric Association, they aim to construct a science-driven model for therapeutic use. 🤝🎓 This group is set to deliver a comprehensive report offering recommendations on regulating these transformative treatments in November. 📅 We commend Vermont's legislators for forming a robust coalition championing scientific and expert-led policy, marking a critical step in national psychedelic policy reform. 👏 #vermont #mentalhealthreform #vermontlegislation #psychedelicscience #psychedelicprogress #psychedelictherapy

I had the pleasure of attending a very insightful session this morning put on by Thalamos at King's College London with updates from (Baroness) Peta Buscombe on the draft Mental Health Bill including digitisation of the Mental Health Care Act. There was a specific focus on Advance Choice Documents (ACDs - see definition below) and the research evidencing how digitising these can create huge efficiencies and better care outcomes for Service Users, Clinicians and Society. Racial inequalities are a huge issue and a focus of the proposed reforms, particularly for those from Black communities where disproportionately high rates of detention exist. The digital ACD research shared by Dr. Lade Smith CBE evidenced that compulsory psychiatric admissions could be reduced by as much as 25% for these Service Users. We also heard an incredibly moving lived experience shared by Steven Gilbert OBE and a strong call to action for us all to support the ACD programme and collaborate to overcome obstacles. It matters and it will save lives! You can learn more about Digital Advance Choice Documents, the research and the call to action over coming days by following https://lnkd.in/epmKy37B Thank-you to to Arden Tomison for the invite and Aahuti Rai for the connection. ACDs - An advance choice document allows service users to have a say in how they wish to be treated during a future crisis or relapse, by making professionals aware of their advance wishes and preferences as requests and/or refusals of treatment. #mha #mentalhealthact #advancechoicedocuments #mentalhealthtech
