Last week, United States Army Veteran Hector Lopez reunited with his #family in California after 17 years of being #deported to Mexico. Mr. Lopez has dedicated his time to advocating for the return of deported veterans. We implore Congress to support #veterans by endorsing the Veteran Service Recognition Act (H.R. 4569). It is a bipartisan bill that would: (1) Allow the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Defense to facilitate opportunities for military recruits and veterans to apply for citizenship during basic training; (2) Compel DHS to identify noncitizens that are veterans before initiating a deportation; (3) Create a Military Family Advisory Committee to recommend whether discretion is merited regarding the deportation of armed forces members, veterans, and covered family members; and (3) Afford deported non-citizen veterans the opportunity to apply for lawful permanent resident status. #KeepThemHome #VeteranServiceRecognitionAct

As of 2022, 9.7% of all military spouses are male. There's sizable variation based on branch of service: Just 3.8% of Marine Corps spouses identified as male, compared to a high of 13.8% in the Air Force. Those roughly 10% face unique challenges, according to research by the Defense Department and Blue Star Families. Male spouses die by suicide at higher rates than female spouses, and female service members married to male civilians have the highest divorce rates in the military.

Military members, that little circle in the center is you. Veterans, that slightly bigger circle is you. You see "everyone else?" Do you? Trust me when I tell you, I get it. When you're in the military your world revolves around that small little circle. It's the important work of defending our nation so of course it's all-encompassing. Once you cross that amorphous curtain to the "veteran" world, it's totally understandable to want to stay close to the flagpole. Many of us do. And that's ok. I worked for the government for awhile after leaving the military and was happy and proud to have done so. I know many feel the same. But it's important to recognize there's an entire world beyond our military and veteran circle (much, much, MUCH larger) and we are completely missing out if we don't push beyond our comfort zone to meet it. Sure the people of that world speak a different language, and their ways confuse and frighten us (cue the unfrozen caveman lawyer from Saturday Night Live), but many of them are pretty cool people. As you're growing your network don't miss out on the opportunity to meet and develop relationships with (as we say in the military and veteran space) "civilian" civilians. Also, now that we've confirmed aliens exist, can we turn our attention to Big Foot? #veteranshelpingveterans #militarytransition #networking #jvknows
