While sodium-ion may not (yet) have the power density for transportation and portable devices, solving stationary energy storage with a cleaner, more sustainable technology has huge applications and the potential to increase and ease the use of renewable energy source on the grid.

Great to see opportunities for long duration ESS in the US market. A 50MWh project is a significant order opportunity. At the same time, it remains indicative of the current ESS technology dynamics that tenders explicitly excluding lithiumion batteries are considered "pilot" projects by the customer. "In one RFP, SRP is seeking a non-lithium-ion inverter-based LDES technology to come online no later than 2028. The resource will be located at the Copper Crossing Energy and Research Center in Florence, Arizona, which will also host a 5-MW, 10-hour storage project developed by CMBlu Energy." "In the second RFP, SRP is seeking a non-lithium-ion, non-inverter based project to pilot at its coal-fired Coronado Generating Station in St. Johns, Arizona. Li-Ion #Batteries To Face Competition From Long-Duration #Storage: Report Global energy research body BloombergNEF Research recently released a report analyzing the Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) growth and compared its efficacy with the popular #Lithium-ion batteries.

Natron Energy, a leader in sodium-ion battery technology, has announced the commencement of commercial-scale operations at its new manufacturing facility in Holland, Michigan. This marks a significant achievement as the first facility in the United States dedicated to producing sodium-ion batteries. These batteries are noted for their high power density, extended lifespan, and enhanced safety features compared to other battery technologies. They are also the only sodium-ion batteries currently on the market that have received the UL listing, indicating their safety and reliability. The facility is projected to produce 600 megawatts of sodium-ion batteries annually at full capacity, providing a template for future large-scale production sites. Starting in June, Natron will begin shipping batteries, initially focusing on data center customers, addressing the critical energy storage needs required to support the burgeoning field of Artificial Intelligence. Natron’s innovative battery technology features patented Prussian blue electrodes that enable faster and more frequent sodium-ion transfer with lower internal resistance compared to other commercial batteries. These batteries support a zero-strain charging and discharging process, boast cycling speeds ten times faster than traditional lithium-ion batteries, and have a lifecycle exceeding 50,000 cycles. Importantly, Natron’s supply chain avoids using scarce minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, relying instead on widely available materials such as aluminum, iron, manganese, and sodium electrolyte, thus offering a more sustainable alternative to conventional battery technologies. According to reports from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and BloombergNEF, battery storage emerged as the leading investment destination in the energy sector in 2023.    BloombergNEF forecasts a 60% jump in global deployments in 2024, reaching approximately 67GW/155GWh, with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21% until the end of the decade.     Falling costs of grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) is a key driver of industry growth, with a 43% decrease in average costs observed in China by February 2024. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology is expected to dominate the stationary BESS market, with nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) systems declining to just 1% of the global market by the decade's end.      This forecast aligns well with the trajectory of TROES, a North American advanced Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) provider using LFP-based technology. It's great to see broader coverage of battery chemistries, as no single chemistry is going to fit all needs and be able to be supplied in the quantity needed to #electrifyeverything. There's a tendency for the latest announcement from a lab about a solid state chemistry or lossless semiconductors etc. to shake everyone and tempt them to wait for the next better thing, but there are very good batteries coming to market that meet mobility and stationary #energystorage needs. #Zinc is abundant and, at last, powerful and rechargeable. If Edison had this battery when he first patented zinc batteries in 1901, perhaps cars would have been electric from the beginning.

"Studies have shown that for renewables to become the source of 90% to 95% of all electricity, the cost of energy storage must be below US$150/kWh. Modern lithium-ion systems are still sitting around US$350/kWh. In part, this is due to high manufacturing costs and their reliance on expensive raw materials to achieve the high energy density needed for modern electric vehicles. Zinc-ion batteries on the other hand, could solve the cost and abundance issues. Using inexpensive, abundant materials such as zinc and manganese not only makes them cheaper to produce, but lowers risk from supply chain disruptions or material shortages that affect lithium-ion materials such as lithium and cobalt." #storage #battery #energy #netzero
