The GBMRO is thrilled to announce we’ve funded our largest project to date, Project DeLaRosa in partnership with Children’s National Hospital. 🤍 Our latest initiative memorializes Christine DeLaRosa and Bernie DeLaRosa, who tragically passed away from Glioblastoma, one of the deadliest CNS tumors, within 15 months of each other. Their children and families continue honoring their legacy by advocating for battling this malignant brain cancer. 🔬 Led by Javad Nazarian, Ph.D., M.Sc. and its global DMG-ACT pre-clinical team, Project DeLaRosa will fund the NICO Myriad Biopsy System, suitable to precisely collect tumor samples from the brain stem. The research involves a novel pre-clinical longitudinal biopsy technique, which enables researchers to take multiple samples from the same tumor over time. This approach provides invaluable insights into how the cancer responds to treatment, potentially leading to developing new, more effective drug combinations and personalized treatment strategies for patients. 🔗 We linked the full announcement on our blog! We're thrilled to share a progress update on Project Liam at Children's Hospital Los Angeles! 🌟 Brain tumors are a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children. Of all the pediatric brain tumors, high-grade gliomas (HGG), like Glioblastoma, are the toughest to treat! For those new to our fifth fully-funded research project that launched this year, Project Liam is named after 2-year-old Liam Singh Gill, who bravely fought Glioblastoma. Project Liam will investigate using immunotherapy as an alternative to conventional treatments. 🔬 Our partners are re-enrolling eligible patients, examining response data from the initial five enrolled patients and conducting analyses of the associated biological correlates. Response rates to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) are generally higher in metastatic brain cancer than in recurrent glioblastoma. Researchers from UCLA Neurosurgery, including Robert Prins, PhD, Won Kim, MD, Linda Liau, MD, PhD, MBA, and Richard Everson, MD, and colleagues have identified distinct alterations in the immune landscapes of the tumor microenvironments in these different tumor types. In addition, the researchers have outlined a framework for how these insights might be translated to enhance immunotherapeutic strategies for these cancers. Our grant funding raised last year has allowed us to further develop research and acquire advanced equipment to study brain tumours. GD2 shows promise as a marker for CAR T cell immunotherapy in brain tumours. We've played a role in establishing two clinical trials using GD2-targeting CAR T cell treatments for glioblastoma in adults and diffuse midline glioma in children. Our pre-clinical research, led by Dr Manjun Li, MD PhD, indicates that increasing GD2 levels in the tumour could enhance the effectiveness of this therapy. This proposal explores methods to achieve this enhancement, potentially improving GD2-targeting CAR T cell treatments for glioblastoma. Positive results could also benefit the treatment of diffuse midline glioma and certain medulloblastomas in children.
