In 2007 and again in 2009, the Chehalis River Basin of Washington State was hit by devastating floods. The 2007 flood caused more than $900 million in damage, including the loss of huge numbers of livestock and farm equipment. In 2011, I remember when someone attending a meeting with the Chehalis Basin Flood Authority said "we should have critter pads." Collective reaction: what are you talking about? "you know, a pile of dirt big enough that the cows could walk up and get out of harms way, or that we could drive a tractor up." After study, funding, and implementation, I'm glad to see this story of success: https://lnkd.in/g7DfYAsP Critter pads prevented a huge amount of loss when the basin was hit by more severe floods in 2022. Creative thinking, a low tech solution, some study, and implementation! What I also love about this story is that it is about success. When I was working in the Basin, the paper tended to only cover what didn't go well... so happy to see the local paper now covering what is working.

Okay, I know I said "April showers bring May flowers", but what I should have said was April showers gives fescue its growing powers. University of Missouri Extension state forage specialist Carson Roberts and forage agronomist Valerie Tate said in a recent news release that mismanaged pastures may continue to see a drag in production despite the return of ample moisture. Weakened plants and poor infiltration are two key factors in the continued decline in grass production.
