National Wildlife Federation’s Post

It's #WorldFireflyDay 🦗💡 Did you know there are more than 2,000 species of fireflies? This phenomenon is called bioluminescence, and the bioluminescent organs in fireflies are found on the underside of the abdomen; creating a chemical reaction within the firefly’s light organ that produces the light. Bioluminescence in fireflies is nearly 100 percent efficient, making it one of the most efficient lights in the world. 🌏 Fun fact: Firefly larvae eat snails, worms, and slugs, which they inject with a numbing chemical to disable. 🐌 #wildlife #fireflies #lightningbugs #funfacts #nature

Share very similar memories, @Jeff Dylan Person and @Greg Nixon. In fact, I was reminiscing with a friend just the other day about summer nights in MO and a front yard thick with fireflies and neighborhood kids trying to catch them. Sadly, my kids did not have the same experience and we lived in the same area in MO when they were growing up so I'm assuming @National Wildlife Federation that there's been some adverse pressure on fireflies over the past several decades. But it's wonderful to know that there is a World Firefly Day.

Loved capturing lightning bugs in an old mayonnaise jar when I was kid. Another fun fact, some species of fireflies will gather in swarms and begin blinking in sync when they reach a critical density.

They are so magical. We do a lot to support them in our yard - their presence is such a gift.

We have left a good portion of our land natural with no chemicals. We have a ton of fireflies now. So cool to see!

I look forward to their arrival every year 😏
