This week of Park and Recreation Month, we are celebrating how agencies can act as advocates for belonging 🌟 What does it mean to be an advocate for belonging? It means to center diversity, equity, and inclusion so that we may model the beautiful, kind, welcoming world we would like to see. Park and Recreation agencies have the power to bring communities together, and create this sense of belonging through inclusion. Our cover contest winner, City of Corvallis Parks and Recreation, put on a production of The Tempest where the cast was filled with diversity in terms of gender, age, and physical ability. About a third of the cast identified as trans, older adults learned about gender diversity, and accessibility accommodations were made for a wheelchair user. Explore how City of Corvallis is an advocate for belonging: https://lnkd.in/eEzgV9Ti Thank you to our 2024 Park and Recreation Month sponsors, (USTA) United States Tennis Association, Bobcat Company, and ACTIVE Network! Everyone experiences play in different ways — it’s the reason why there isn’t just one type of spray feature or one type of pool. Age, ability and even personal preference all contribute to how someone engages within a space and with other people. Accounting for these differences helps to create an inclusive and inviting environment. There are many different kinds of play. Collaborative, imaginative and multigenerational play can foster important skills needed for childhood development. When these types of play are paired with water activities found in areas like splash pads, risky play — the positive kind — is introduced and children often gain more confidence around water while playing. Read the full article from Briana Valente to learn about the importance of positive experiences around water and the thought that goes into designing welcoming play spaces: https://bit.ly/4dxXYk3 #PowerOfParks #WhereYouBelong #ParksAndRec #Parks #Recreation #Aquatics #Inclusion #Belonging

Accessibility ≠ just physical access. Inclusion ≠ just meeting legal standards. It’s not the accessible buildings that are needed. It’s the empowerment to navigate life freely. As the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games approach, we're not just preparing for an extraordinary display of athleticism but also for a robust conversation on disability, accessibility, and inclusion. From August 28th to September 8th, while 4,400 athletes compete across 22 sports, an equally important narrative unfolds off the field. In our next episode, we’ll be joined by Andy Barrow, a former Paralympian who has focused on advocacy for disability rights and accessibility. Andy will share his journey from the world of elite sport to becoming a leading voice in the fight for a more inclusive society. We’ll explore the challenges still faced by disabled individuals, the progress made, and the steps we must take to ensure everyone has the opportunity to live, work, and participate fully in society. This isn’t just about the Games – it’s about the ongoing movement for equality and empowerment. Join us for an insightful conversation beyond sport, highlighting the real victories still to be won. Stay tuned! #DisabilityRights #AndyBarrow #Inclusion #AccessibilityForAll #Paris2024 #Empowerment #wayfinding #signage

@alexroca91, when discussing DEI, remember that inclusivity means championing those from disadvantaged backgrounds or those with disabilities to success. Though the process may be gradual, it's undeniably worthwhile. It was a true honor to speak at the Michigan Civil Rights Commission meeting on Monday to provide my perspective on improving accessibility in outdoor recreation. Legislation such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), passed in 1990, and the recently passed EXPLORE Act have been significant milestones in ensuring that all people, regardless of their abilities, can enjoy activities equally. Central to outdoor innovation is accessibility. It’s important that we keep this momentum going in accessibility improvements as the Outdoor Recreation Innovation Action Network (ORIAN) and the economic ecosystem broadly expand outdoor recreation as an asset for our region. These initiatives towards a more accessible outdoor recreation community take many forms. As I shared with the Commission, this can include improving the resources already there through initiatives like enhancing trails and facilities, providing adaptive equipment, and conducting public awareness campaigns. And, it requires taking a proactive approach in intentionally designing recreation spaces so they’re inclusive, consulting with disability advocates, and keeping accessibility front of mind in innovation. As we continue to grow our region’s outdoor recreation economy, we can welcome so many more people when we create spaces where everyone can participate. Transforming the region so that all are able to explore requires commitment at all levels, and I’m grateful for the Michigan Civil Rights Commission and their leadership. Let’s continue to stay focused on strategies to improve the inclusivity of outdoor recreation. #innovation #accessibility #outdoorinnovation #outdoorrecreation #outdooraccessibility #innovatemarquette #imqt #upperpeninsula #marquette #michigan

Important report around greening services for persons with disabilities! It's fundamental to think how services can become more and more sustainable.
Inspiring practises on greening services for persons with disabilities! 🌱 Thanks EASPD - European Association of Service providers for Persons with Disabilities for giving us in Tukena Foundation (former Kehitysvammaisten Palvelusäätiö ) the opportunity to share our practise and to learn from others! The Wise Choice project (Viisas valinta -hanke) promoted the Sustainable Development Goals outlined in Agenda 2030 by empowering persons with intellectual disabilities. During the project we enhanced knowledge and skills related to sustainable choices and supported community engagement. Thanks Risto Räkköläinen Nora Korhonen Essi Vertanen for the great work 🥳 https://lnkd.in/dey4_ggG

Accessible Racing Life. Promoting Motorsport event accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities. A passionate advocate who champions equal access, diversity and awareness.
Accessibility is about so much more than installing a ramp here or an accessible toilet there. The true heart of accessibility is about breaking down barriers and promoting change. Change of attitudes, change of societal expectation, change of stigmas associated with having a disability. We should be using our platforms to educate people about what it truly means to create accessible spaces for people with disabilities. Yes, it’s a legal obligation for event providers to ensure that they are creating safe and inclusive spaces for people with disabilities. But it’s also up to those people to learn from lived experiences. There may be adequate signage, but does it get the message across with proper context? Does it incorporate braille and other elements? If you really care about your fans, you’ll take the time to listen, to get back to basics and to create a legacy that you can be proud of! #Accessibility #Inclusion #Motorsport #F1 #DisabilityAwareness
