In this conversation with Dr. Andrea Terrero Gabbadon, Ph.D., we discuss why educators of color leave: working conditions and leadership behaviors. The good news is that school and district leaders can do something about this, and Dr. Gabbadon walks you through how. She shares 6 principles, backed by research, that will help you create the types of inclusive schools where educators of color will want to work and will thrive. Educators of color benefit all students in our schools and it's time to look at the changes we can make in the culture, school practices, and frankly our own leadership behaviors that can make a real difference now in supporting and retaining teachers of color. Look Out Above!' is our answer to a glaring gap in both academic and corporate training. We wrote this book because we saw first hand that success in the real world is about more than what you learned in class. It's about mastering the art of contribution, communication, leadership, and advocacy in ways that matter at work.

Read our past report, Implementing Systemwide Changes in the CSU, authored by Thad Nodine and Robert Gabriner. This report found that the Academy served as a catalyst in helping campus teams address resistance and take advantage of opportunities for substantive change through leadership, communications, and networking. As a result, the Academy appears to be well positioned, with additional supports and resources, to facilitate and deepen campus efforts to address long-standing issues such as equity. How did each of us get to this place in our leadership? By the grace of someone else. - Someone poured into us. - Someone hired us when we weren’t fully qualified. - Someone corrected our mistakes (vs. washing their hands of us). - Someone spent time teaching us. Our newest crop of future leaders is graduating high school and college. How can we support them? Step 1: Share your best advice to new grads in the comments below. Step 2: I'll compile all that advice into a document and post it here. Step 3: Share our collaborative "fountain of advice” with your graduating future leaders! Selfishly, I’m looking forward to sharing the complete list of advice with our precious new Trinity Christian Academy grad, Cate, on our vision retreat before she heads off to Auburn University in the fall. #War #Eagle 🦅 Leave your best advice for new grads in the comments below!
