The ambition of efforts to reduce the salience of nuclear weapons will depend on the overall trajectory of international politics. But the growing role and significance of nuclear weapons is both the result and a driver of rivalry between the nuclear-weapon states.
Ahead of the 2024 PrepCom, this new ELN policy brief outlines what measures NPT states parties could take to reduce the salience of nuclear weapons depending on the international security environment.

Some leaders suggest they're ready to unleash nuclear devastation. Understanding their perspective is crucial – perhaps they feel threatened themselves. Can certain fears and concerns be easily relieved?
To halt this downward spiral, open, unconditional dialogue without condemnation is essential. We must advocate for an inclusive global political stage where no nation is isolated. Collaborating to address threats can render weapons and aggressive rhetoric unnecessary.
The nuclear shadow that loomed over humanity last century has returned with a vengeance.
Some leaders regularly imply that they are fully prepared to unleash nuclear hell — an outrageous threat that the world must condemn with clarity and force.
And the vital norms and standards against the proliferation, testing and use of nuclear weapons are being eroded.
This week I reiterated my call to accelerate the implementation of all nuclear disarmament commitments, including under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, and to bring the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty into force.
The world must no longer be held hostage by these devices of death.
We currently have 2 wars in Ukraine and in Gaza where the threat of using nuclear weapons is at play. Therefore, ceasefire now in both wars so that peace can be negotiated. PEACE is a prerequisite for the Nations of the World to be UNITED to work towards the abolition of these heinous weapons.

I completely agree with the statement. Nuclear weapons pose a grave threat to humanity and the planet as a whole. The devastating impact of nuclear weapons is well-documented, and the potential for catastrophic consequences in the event of their use cannot be overstated.
It is crucial for the international community to work towards nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation to prevent the use of these weapons of mass destruction. This requires strong political will, diplomatic efforts, and cooperation among nations to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear arsenals.
Efforts such as the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which aims to outlaw nuclear weapons globally, are important steps towards creating a world free of nuclear weapons. Additionally, dialogue and engagement between nuclear-armed states and non-nuclear-weapon states are essential to build trust and work towards disarmament.
It is imperative that we continue to advocate for peace, nuclear disarmament, and the elimination of nuclear weapons to ensure a safer and more secure world for current and future generations.
