Today we recognize International Day of Immunology. Thanks to the research of immunologists, we know that a functional, highly regulated and balanced immune system plays a major role in staying healthy. Even minor changes in the immune system can influence the manifestation of diseases and conditions like cancer, allergies, asthma and more. When it comes down to it, immunology serves as the foundation for the development of treatments for a range of diseases. At Immatics, we're working to develop therapies that harness the body’s own immune system to target and destroy cancer cells. Let's continue to celebrate the advancements in immunology that are changing lives every day! At Columbia Children’s Health, we see patients every day with the most complex conditions and who need the most advanced care. Today, #RareDiseaseDay, gives us an opportunity to recognize the dedication of members of our Natural Killer Cell Evaluation and Research program (NEAR). This team of specialists in pediatric immunology, allergy, and rheumatology led by department chair Jordan Orange, MD, PhD work together to assess infants, children, and adults whose symptoms suggest they may have a natural killer (NK) cell or primary immunodeficiency disease. The NEAR team offers patients diagnosis, evaluation, testing, and access to research studies. NK cells (pictured here) are key elements of the immune system. They inhibit the growth of many kinds of cancers and the spread of infections. In children and adults with NK cell deficiency syndromes, these cells are absent or dysfunctional. Learn more about Columbia University Irving Medical Center's NEAR Program and how research in our labs is increasing our understanding of specific genetic mutations and their roles in NK cell deficiencies - https://bit.ly/3TgEmIH 📸 Emily Mace, Mace Lab #primaryimmunodeficiencydisease #Naturalkillercell #NKcell #research

Open Access: A high prevalence of hereditary alpha-tryptasemia in pediatric mastocytoma. First author: M. Madrange Read the article here: doi.org/10.1111/all.16185 Madrange et al. report a high prevalence of hereditary alpha-tryptamesia in patients with paediatric mastocytoma suggesting a pathophysiological link between them. Distinct differences were found in the prevalence of hereditary alpha-tryptasemia in patients with pediatric-onset maculopapular cutaneous mastocytosis (MPCM) compared to adult-onset MPCM. #Alergy_journal Read more articles published in #Allergy on clinical immunology here: https://lnkd.in/ex3Y69tY
