GM at Fabmill Engineering (Pty) Ltd in association with Tsanstabane Drilling Services (Pty) Ltd. We Specialize in the Manufacturing of Equipment for the Southern African Drilling Industry.
Hi everyone. Hope you had a wonderful long weekend. In this post I would like to share a success story second to none. It involves the verry professional, skilled and experienced people from our associated company Tsantsabane Drilling Services (Pty) Ltd in collaboration with the engineering and manufacturing expertise of Fabmill Engineering (Pty) Ltd. Now this article is about Dewatering and Exploration Drilling done on a huge scale, but there is nothing conventional to the absolute immensity of the project. So, you RC, Production and even Water Well Drilling oaks can read on. And if you are in the Dewatering sector and think, "been there, done that", hold on to your seat. This whole project kicked off in 2012. It was a tender allocated to TDS from Anglo for Production (Dewatering) and Exploration bore holes to be executed at their Kolomela and Sishen open cast iron ore mining sites in the Northern Cape. The Sishen project concluded in 2017, but the Kolomela project is still going strong today. The objective was strait forward. Production and Exploration holes to a depth off 400m. Sounds easy enough? The tasks specific demands, not so easy. Some Production holes had to start at 24" up to 120m, then reduce to 20" up to 400m deep. The other holes had to start at 20" for 120m, then reduce to 17 1/2" up to 400m deep. There was even one hole that was drilled 24" all the way to 300m deep. The Exploration bore holes had to start at 20" for 6m then reduce to 14" up to 120m and then reduce to 10" up to 400m deep. Now to you who are not impressed yet. They have drilled over 200 Exploration holes and over 140 Production holes to date. Most of the work done by one Drill Rig after the Sishen contract expired. The drill rig was built inhouse in collaboration with TDS's Engineering division and Fabmill. It is a massive machine with a 60 ton pull back and, read correctly, up to 20 000 newton metre torque. The gearbox of the machine was designed by Peet de Beer (Head of Engineering Design at Fabmill.) and Charles Jansen (The man behind the whole project and back then, head of Manufacturing and Engineering at TDS.) and was build and assembled by Fabmill Engineering. It is an absolute monster of a machine. Why so much torque you may ask. Well, when they hit water so strong that not even a Hyper N181 hammer can penetrate then they have to switch over to 20" Tricone. Then there is the formation that varies from iron ore, dolomite and quartet to the dreaded banded iron and more. There are also massive cavities and breaks in the formation to deal with. The rig has undergone some maintenance work over the years. The gearbox had a few services done and two new drive shafts put in. But it is still going strong. We have a spare gearbox on standby for years, only collecting dust. PLEASE KEEP ON READING THE REST OF THE STORY IN THE NEXT POST! 👍

🤳 Mining Engineering ✍️ The main responsibility of a mining Engineer is to design mines to ensure that minerals from an ore body are extracted safely and economically in line with predetermined business targets. 🛸 In addition to these responsibilities, a mining Engineer may become involved in several activities. These are: ⭐ Working with geologists to locate and evaluate new ore deposits. ⭐ Researching and developing new mining processes, technology and methods. ⭐ Conducting feasibility studies on greenfield and brownfield projects. ⭐ Conducting research into the health and safety of mine workers. ✍️ During research into their careers, mining engineers may decide to specialize in the fields of rock engineering, mining economics, geology project design. 🕹️ Mining Engineering as a career combines several areas of expertise. In addition to specialist mining knowledge and engineering expertise, a mining Engineer needs strong management skill, people skills and sound understanding of financial and business principles. A graduate (university/university of technology) mining Engineer usually starts off his or her career in the reduction complex of a mine and progresses to a management position such as mine manager or senior mining Engineer where he or she will apply and implement the knowledge. ⚒️ Mining engineers are employed by the mining and base metal industries such as implants, Anglo Coal, BHP Billiton and many others. #MiningEngineering #Engineers
