Data, when used properly, is a very powerful tool that assists decision making, proves or disproves and provides compelling evidence amongst a host of other things. But when data is misused, something which has become common place in a world of information overload, can be detrimental. Statistics and analytics have been central to most of my working career, it still is. Well before that though, my childhood was spent either playing sport, attending sport, reading about sport or trawling though sports stats. It is the reason I watch sport through an analytical lens, trying to determine what numbers matter and which don’t, its also the reason I am not a 'great hang' when sport is on! This leads me to my very recent working hypothesis, and by recent I mean, its about 16 hours old from the time of writing this post– the Zach Merrett Eye Test Theory. Champion Data, the Australian Football League’s analytics bible, who strapline is one of the best in the business – The Story Behind the Game, has Zach Merret as the 70th ranked player in the league – 70th! I thought I had mis-heard it, perhaps they mean 7th. But alas, it was SEVENTY! I watch Essendon Football Club very closely on a week-to-week basis, as do football experts and commentators from across Australia - the Eye Test says otherwise about this 70th ranking. Whilst subjective, many have Zach Merrett as an early candidate for All Australian captain, he is second favourite in the Brownlow Medal betting and the Coaches Voting awards, he is top 3 in most if not all other football media awards, yet Champion Data rank him behind 69 other players. The Eye Test and data can sometimes be at loggerheads, always be cautious when looking at data on face value, and whilst Champion Data provide the story behind the game, on this occasion they have provided A story behind the game…the eye test, has provided a different version of events, a more compelling one and I would argue (perhaps with a hint of bias), a more accurate one. But maybe our eyes and by extension our frontal lobe process things differently, with a little more context and nuance, than the black and white nature of numbers alone - more on the neuroscience of data and communication in the near future, watch this space! #data #sport #analytics #statistics #AFL #research #intel #curiousity #strategy #quant #qual
