This past Wednesday, Metropolitan College of New York's new president, Charles J. Gibbs, EdD, convened his first gathering of the college's faculty and staff. As the smiles below clearly indicate, my colleagues and I stand ready to eagerly support President Gibbs as the college pursues its important goals in the days, weeks, months, and years ahead. (Apologies to any member of my MCNY LinkedIn network who I did not tag. Please tag them in your comments.) #MCNY #ThePowerOfPurpose #MCNYForward #GettingItDone

Wow! As I reflect on my journey to my current position, I am reminded to always trust the process. On my journey, there were times when I couldn't understand why I did not get the outcome I wanted and it is now, that I understand I was being led to my calling/my purpose - creating intentional programs for Black students from South Central to be successful. As STEM manager for Black College Success, I have had the honor of partnering with USC Viterbi School of Engineering and SoLa Impact to bring all things science, technology, engineering, art/architecture/aerospace, and math (STEAM) to 10th-12th grade Black students in South Central LA. I have been with the org a whole year as of March 7th and I do thank them for trusting me to lead such an impactful initiative. I also am grateful for all the experiences that have prepared and guided me to this point! If you would like to know more about what I do, let's chat!! #studentsuccess #steameducation #blackstudents Reflection of experiences: 1. Being a first-generation student from South Central LA and not knowing how to navigate the college application process I sought help from TRIO, Upward Bound Program. 2. Fast forward, after undergrad I became a college advisor with the USC College Advising Corps assisting students like myself through the college application process. As a CAC advisor I also gained a variety of skills that are relevant to my work today such as, data management, planning, budgeting, facilitating, grant writing, fundraising, network, and the list goes on. 3. After serving with the corp, I transitioned from the k-12 setting to higher education. As an admissions counselor with University of California, Riverside I was able to learn how to become a story teller, recruit, analyze data, problem solve, expand my network and so much more. 4. Simutaneously, I served as a persist coach with SMASH an organization who is leveling the playing field through tech. Now, my background is not in STEM however, through this position I was able to learn more about STEM majors and careers, understand how students should prepapre in high school, through UCR I understand what stands out on an application, and as a coach I understand how students can be successful on campus and after.

Professional learning should not be delivered--it is not a Fed Ex package.
This new study from EdWeek Market Brief keeps repeating one of my biggest pet peeves in the #professionaldevelopment landscape. In a survey on "in person" and "virtual" #pd, they keep using the verb "delivered" to describe a professional development experience. You can't "deliver" development. It isn't a package. It's an ongoing, iterative process. Anybody who is "delivering" #professionallearning to #schools isn't worth the time or money. It doesn't matter if it's in person or virtual. https://lnkd.in/gc2XVPd2 #schoolleadership #schoolleaders #educationalleadership Sibme

Wow. 8 years ago today, a young Daniel with butterflies in his stomach moved onto campus at the University of the Cumberlands. His heart was tense as he wondered what to expect and whether he would enjoy the new sensation. Before he knew it, young Daniel met some of the most incredible people in my life who significantly impacted me. Before he knew it, young Daniel was involved with groups and departments throughout campus that significantly impacted his future, including being the college mascot—Pete the Patriot! Some tips from my experience as a college alum and former college mascot: 1. Actively participate in extracurricular activities and take advantage of opportunities, but only a few simultaneously. 2. Seek help before a problem emerges. 3. Feel free to drop a class. 4. Stay healthy. Eat healthy and find the time to exercise. Doing so will help you more than you know. 5. Cultivate friendships with a small group of others you connect well with—it's easy to be friends with everyone on campus (especially if you or you build your way up to becoming an extrovert). Usually, your friend group gets smaller after college, and you become very closely connected with those few friends with whom you initially connected well (mine live in Knoxville, and I talk to them almost daily!). 6. Most importantly - think of your education as giving you skills that will help you make a positive mark on this world. I am thinking about all of the first-year students and all college students who are continuing their education this month. These are our emerging leaders who will make an impact on the world.
