Wings of Prosperity: Arjun Ranjane's Poultry Farming
Arjun Maruti Ranjane never imagined he'd become a poultry farmer. Life in the Sakhar village in Velhe taluka in Maharashtra had always been about scraping by, but a meeting with the Raintree Foundation team changed everything for Arjun.
"Chickens? Here?" Arjun laughed when the idea was first proposed. His mind raced with images of mongoose and wild cats stalking through the night. "They'd be lunch before sunrise!"
As Arjun saw problems, the Raintree Foundation team saw potential. They helped him build a simple shelter, a cage for the birds that was sturdy enough to keep predators at bay. Still skeptical, Arjun decided to take a leap of faith.
With fifty donated hens clucking away in their new home, Arjun's small poultry farm came to life. Soon, the steady income from egg sales began to make a real difference in his household.
But the true magic of Arjun's venture revealed itself later. Even when the hens stopped laying, they weren't done contributing to his success. Selling the mature birds brought in an extra INR 400 to INR 600 per bird – a small fortune in Arjun's world.
Today, you'll find Arjun tending to his flock with a smile on his face. "Who knew these little birds could change so much?" he often muses. The steady income has brought stability to his family, and he's always dreaming up ways to expand.
Arjun's story is more than just about chickens. It's about the power of an open mind and a willingness to try something new. In a village where tradition often rules, Arjun became a pioneer. His success serves as an inspiration to his neighbors, proving that with the right information and a bit of courage, anyone can carve out a brighter future.
At the Raintree Foundation, we believe in the potential of our community members like Arjun and the power of community-driven initiatives. We are committed to fostering sustainable livelihoods and empowering rural communities to build a brighter and resilient future.

Digital inclusion should be a human right in a world where the quality of our thinking and scale of our productivity. will soon be determined by our capacity to use digital augmention. Organisations like #Kvuno are unique in that they aren't sending enumerators out to collect farmer data but nudging and empowering farmers to record and learn about their farming practices through digital tools. #Wealth2TheFarmer

In rural Sinnar, Maharashtra, goat rearing is more than just a livelihood—it’s an insurance policy for small and marginal farmers. Known as the “poor man’s cow,” goats thrive in harsh environments and on low-fertility lands, providing a consistent source of income even in drought-prone areas. In this region, where agricultural activities are hampered by water scarcity, goats have been a lifeline for many families.
However, the potential of goat farming can only be fully realized through scientific practices and collective action. That’s where Savitribai Phule Goat Farming Producer Company Ltd., established by Yuva Mitra with the support of NABARD, steps in. This women-owned enterprise has become a beacon of hope in Sinnar, empowering marginalized women through sustainable goat farming.

Events of #G20 stature must have a clear cut outcome with timelines and responsibility chart . The combined declaration has come out very well but strategy in action seems to be missing . Learn about the important part of the declaration concerning #farmers and #sustainability . However I was delighted to see that finally the policy makers have shown concerns about #ageingfarmers . In times to come growers of #food may be a bigger problem than the #food itself .
Essmart successfully partnered with Krimanshi and Villgro to conduct a unique market insights project. Our objective was to gain insights into how farmers perceive Krimanshi's animal feed and their impact on the agricultural landscape.
Our research involved in-depth interviews with shop owners and end-users, focusing on critical aspects such as product comparison, pricing sensitivity, packaging perception, and recommendations for effective go-to-market strategies.
A key focus was on the product’s impact on milk yield, revealing remarkable results – more than 80% of farmers experienced an increase in milk output, fat percentage, and the health of their cows after using Krimanshi’s feed. The culmination of these insights not only provided a nuanced picture of the market dynamics but also enabled us to offer actionable recommendations for Krimanshi to inform its Go-To-Market Strategy for expansion into Karnataka.

❤️ #ThrowbackThursday In the 18th century, the Maharaja of Bhavnagar, Gujarat, Krishna Kumarsinhji Bhavsinhji, who was also the first Indian Governor of Madras, gifted a pair of Gir cattle to Celso Garcia Cid, a prominent figure in Brazilian livestock history & a successful entrepreneur. The bull from this pair was named 'Krishna', after the Hindu deity, & its introduction to Brazil in 1960 sparked a genetic revolution in the country's dairy industry. Hence even now their coin has the image of the Indian Gir Cow.
This is the connection between Brazil & the Gir cow from India, it is a #FascinatingStory of international #AgriculturalExchange & the impact of #SelectiveBreeding. The Gir cow, a dairy breed native to the Gujarat region of India, is known for its high milk production, hardiness, & adaptability to tropical conditions😍
❤️The Gir cattle were crossbred with Holstein, a Dutch dairy breed, to create the Girolando hybrid in Brazil. This new breed combined the robustness of the Gir with the high milk yield of the Holstein, leading to a significant increase in milk production in Brazil. It's estimated that 80% of Brazilian Gir cattle carry genes from the 'Krishna' bull.
The Girolando breed was officially registered in 1989 by Brazil's agriculture ministry & has contributed to about 80% of the nation's milk production and lead to #WhiteRevolution there!
❤️This successful integration of the Gir breed into Brazilian agriculture is a testament to the global importance of genetic diversity and the benefits of crossbreeding in livestock. It's a story that highlights the long-standing connections between India and Brazil in the field of agriculture and animal husbandry. It seems after so many years, we lost that Krishna Cow's original genes & India is getting it back now from Brazil, if interested pls read it in WebLinks below:-

Challenges are an inevitable part of the dynamic agriculture journey. Recently, Growpital faced an unexpected hurdle – a notice from SEBI leading to the freezing of our bank accounts. This development has impacted our farm operations, prompting a reevaluation of our commitment to transparency and growth. As we navigate through this challenge, our priority is swiftly resolving the SEBI issue and returning to normalcy. Together, we are determined to overcome this hurdle, rejuvenate our farms, and emerge stronger in our mission to promote “Desh Ka Culture - Agriculture” As we always say, let the dust settle, and we will continue to strive for a golden future in agriculture. 😊

Have been reflecting on this smartfarm feature by @citizen tv and presented by @Dennis Otieno which highlights a young small holder farmer @Samuel Ndungu ingenious innovation on how he has been able to utilise the now outdated CDs to wade off invasive birds from his farm. This has ensured he is able to minimise production loses and realise profits from his farming. Small holder farmers face a myriad of challenges to get value from their production and one of these is market access. In this feature I highlighted how #Tawifresh is making a difference by working with farmers like Samuel to provide market access through its e-commerce platform giving them a platform to sell their produce.
