Caring for a loved one with dementia is tough, and it's not one we prepare for in advance. Most of us will undertake a caring role at some stage in our lives, to a parent, partner or sibling. It's not a role we're sufficiently prepared for. Most of us expect to finish education, more or less, find interesting work, and meet a partner to spend a few decades with. Where does the training for being a carer to a loved one with advanced dementia come in? 1 in 5 people are currently providing unpaid support, according to a report by CarersWeek .org in 2023. What do you think we need to do as a community, to prepare for care work? Should we learn about caring at school? Should employers know how to safeguard jobs when workers need time off to provide care? After Umbrage is a charity for carers, we provide free four day breaks for caregivers, via a referral scheme. You can find out more about us on our website. If you have experience of caring, what do you think we need to do to help people to prepare to care? #DementiaUk #CareCharityUk #AfterUmbrage

A recent article we came across, highlighted that a woman says the social care she desperately needs is difficult to access because it is only "focussed on basic needs". Vera Shilling, 62, from Cambridgeshire, was left severely visually impaired after an infection 12 years ago. She said that because she could wash and dress herself, social care became "non-existent" and not "flexible". "It would just be nice to know that there was somebody coming in to check on me," she said. Caron Males, of the non-profit social care provider Dimensions, is part of a group petitioning for care support workers to be paid in line with an NHS Band 3 care assistant. She said: "It's a very demanding job, very emotional, you need to have lots of training in terms of medical needs. "Support workers support people with all complex disabilities to live their lives in the community and they need recognition for what they are doing." Recruiting and retaining workers in the care sector is "difficult", she says. "It worries me for the people that we support, it worries me what's going to happen to them and how we are going to make sure that we can keep recruiting and we can keep supporting them to live the best life ever because this is their life," she said. #HealthcareAssistant #healthcare #healthcarejobs #healthcareindustry #NHS #homecareservices #homecareagency #homecareservice #carer #healthcareheroes #healthcareworkers #healthcareworker #careworker

Through our ‘Help Us Pay for the Extra Day’ Appeal we are aiming to raise the £21,270 it will cost to run our services on 29 February - the additional day in 2024. With your support, we can help people to live well with a life-limiting illness. At Farleigh, our Occupational Therapists (OTs) enable individuals to continue to do what they want, need, or have to do in the easiest way possible - by promoting independence whilst considering and upholding their wishes and needs. Whether this takes the form of a new rise and recliner chair for our patients to sit comfortably or a stair rail to help them regain confidence when walking up and down the stairs, our OTs see beyond diagnoses and limitations to hopes and aspirations. They look at relationships between the activities their patients do every day – their occupations – alongside the challenges that they face and their environment. Maggie, a Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist says, “People often think occupational therapy relates to installing special equipment. While that is part of the care, it isn’t the starting point. We look at the whole person in a holistic way. What is preventing them from achieving their goals, what will motivate them? OTs offer a problem-solving approach to help patients and their loved ones find their solutions to empower them and give back some control.” Your company donation of £80.00 could help pay for 2 hours of specialist occupational therapy to help a patient continue to do the things they need to do in a daily life. HSX is part of the collaborative effort between state agencies, counties, and local non-profits and community organizations, healthcare, and social services providers to create an integrated platform for care coordination. PA Navigate will screen residents for social needs such as childcare, transportation, housing and food insecurity, and other needs related to social determinants of health (SDOH). INTERNATIONAL MEN'S DAY MESSAGE from Mark Sleigh Chair, Healthier Illawarra Men. The great Albert Einstein once said, “Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value”. As today is International Men's Day, it is a perfect opportunity to reflect on those words. Many of us are driven by success in whatever form that looks like, but perhaps the better measure of a man is the value they return to their family, friends, workplace and community. Fostering men and boys of better value is essentially what we are trying to achieve through Healthier Illawarra Men. Our mission at HIM is to empower men to make positive choices for their physical and mental health, and to provide them with the resources and support necessary to lead healthier lives. Our charter is to: 1. Raise awareness of men’s health issues, including mental health, and to encourage men to be more proactive regarding their own health. 2. Raise awareness of appropriate behaviours to prevent domestic, family and sexual violence. The funds we raise are reinvested back into programs in the Illawarra that directly and proactively assist our charter. We were delighted to announce on Friday that Escabags - Escape Bags, The Man Walk Australia Incorporated, Raising the Bar Foundation, What Were You Wearing? - Australia, Lifeline South Coast, Top Blokes Foundation and Gawura Aboriginal Corporation IKMSG were selected as our charity recipients from our #IMD2023 lunch. The Australian theme for IMD 2023 is “Healthy Men, Healthy World”. At Healthier Illawarra Men we are working together to foster better men of value and therefore a better community for the Illawarra.
