📅 One year ago today, NEWT and partners published the groundbreaking report, "Wildlands in New England: Past, Present, and Future," which issued a clarion call for accelerated wildlands conservation in the Northeast. The first-of-its-kind analysis quantified the extent of permanently protected landscapes in New England. The results were sobering: Just over 3 percent of the region enjoys the promise of a future free from development and exploitation. NEWT strives every day to increase that number. By conserving wildlands alongside working forests and farms, and supporting sustainable, resilient communities, we can secure a brighter, more hopeful future for humans and wildlife. Private Forest Accord Grant Program | Learn more at PFAgrants.com The ODFW Private Forest Accord (PFA) Grant Program is an incredible opportunity to move the dial toward conservation and recovery for some of Oregon’s most sensitive fish and amphibians. With significant investment from the State of Oregon and timber harvest tax revenue, the PFA Mitigation Fund will be capable of delivering nearly $15 million in conservation grants every year. Watershed-scale investments in projects like stream habitat restoration, removal of barriers to fish passage, cold water and flow protection, beaver-modified habitat creation, and more will create statewide benefits for the species covered by the PFA Habitat Conservation Plan and offset the potential impacts caused by forest practices on private lands. The investments will be big, the projects on the ground will be large, and the benefits to Oregon’s fish and wildlife will be huge. Good news just came out for Ohio's forests! On January 10, the Ohio House of Representatives passed a bill which provides funding for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to create a tree seedling nursery. The nursery will initially supply up to 500,000 tree seedlings annually for three years, increasing capacity afterward, for use on public and private lands. Replanting and restoring native trees is a crucial strategy in conservation efforts in Ohio to increase forest cover, enhance the quality of our forests and mitigate climate change. However, a nationwide shortage of seedlings, combined with a lack of different species available in tree planting stock, have negatively impacted forest conservation here in Ohio. Establishing a new statewide nursery with a variety of native species will tackle both sides of this problem. It increases both the availability of tree seedlings and the number of species available for planting to landowners and conservation practitioners. 3 Calhoun Sisters' Ranch was recently chosen by Audubon California to become an Audubon Certified Bird Friendly Land, the first ranch in our region. North America's grasslands are among the most imperiled ecosystems in the world. As a result, grassland birds have declined more than any other bird group in the continent, by as much as 80% for some species.   The vast majority of America’s grassland birds breed on private lands which is why working with ranchers is our best hope for conserving them. California has 61 million acres of rangelands that provide food production, carbon sequestration, water infiltration, and habitat for a wide range of species.   A recent study identifies California grasslands as more reliable and resilient carbon sinks than forests (Pawlok 2018). However, this historic California land use is under threat with an average of 20,000 acres a year being lost to development or crop conversion (Cameron et al2014).   Climate change, invasive species, aquifer depletion, and poor grazing practices also degrade large portions of grasslands, increasing economic and ecological vulnerability. To slow the loss of rangelands, stabilize declining populations of grassland birds and wildlife, and contribute to climate mitigation, Audubon created the Audubon Conservation Ranching Program (ACR). For our Kernow Conservation CIC water vole initiative we're using camera traps to survey for American mink, with one of the by-products being that we get to learn about the other species that are making use of the local landscape. The footage here shows red deer, which divide opinion in the Cober Valley in West Cornwall. Thought to have been introduced to the area, and despite come culling, the population continues to grow with herds of over 40 does sometimes seen. See the end of the video for their inquisitive nature too! In the absence of other large wild herbivores they fulfil a role in maintaining the few open, marshy areas in the valley through trampling and grazing. These areas provide habitat for endangered species such as the marsh fritillary butterfly. However during daylight hours they tend to stay out of sight, hiding in areas of woodland. Here they can have a significant effect, through the same trampling and grazing behaviours, by inhibiting the regeneration of our shrunken temperate rainforests. With these competing interests, the only real solution that I can see for this is for more land in the valley to be given over to nature restoration and rewilding. A lot of the area is marginal agricultural land so in terms of food production loss the impacts would be limited, however there would be a need for the right financial support policies for landowners.
