Today, I completed a suicide awareness course. Mental health is an integral aspect of our overall well-being, and understanding how to provide the right support can make a life-saving difference. Through this course, I've learned to identify warning signs, engage in meaningful conversations, and connect individuals with the appropriate resources. Awareness and education are key to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide. It’s essential to create environments where people feel safe to talk about their struggles without fear of judgment. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for help. Suicide is not an easy topic to discuss, but it can be vital – by discussing this, you could be saving a life! If you’re trying to support someone who feels suicidal, remember, you don’t need to find all the answers. You can simply listen to them, let them know you are, and help them through that moment. It’s important that you get support for yourself too – self-care is so important for your mental wellbeing, and it equips you, so that you are prepared to handle these difficult conversations. #whenitcomestopeople #suicideawareness

As Mental Health Awareness Month rapidly approaches you may be wondering how you can help spread awareness and acceptance. Missouri DMH has shared a toolkit resource from SAMHSA that has some great information. I would also like to bring awareness to the fact that April is national minority health month. This observance is built to help bring awareness to the health disparities that persist among racial and ethnic minority populations. There are also some great resources regarding national minority health month on SAMHSA as well that might be a benefit to explore to help you know how to advocate and take action. Remember to make your voice heard to help reduce stigma and bring awareness to disparities!
