Here's a list of 11 female-led startups & entrepreneurs tackling some of the biggest challenges in early parenthood. In advance of Mother's Day, I want to give a massive shout out to these women not only because they're battling the forces of the status quo, but because they have impacted the journey of Tiny Earth Toys. 👯 They have built a community where there could have just been competition. 👯 They have been open, when so many others would have been closed. 👯 And they have been champions, when it would have been so much easier to be cutthroat. It is not lost on me that many of them are founder/entrepreneurs AND parents working to make the world better for children, mothers and families. No small achievement. The first responses are so positive and I get really some nice and unexpected suggestions! Based on the work of StartupAmsterdam and Amsterdam Impact, Amsterdam recently approved a four-year plan which aims to make Amsterdam the most social impact-driven innovation hub in Europe. That's very good news and Im curious to see how that will influence startups with a circular focus. Perhaps unknowingly living under a rock the past 5 days but this has just come across my feed and genuinely.... 🤬😱 WTF?!!! Its worth noting that the $7m Kiki raised was before their pivot to serve all those 'corporate girlies' and I will be intently watching to see what their backers say next (beyond Blackbird's first statement saying the team understands the reaction this has caused and has taken on board all feedback") But I'm right there with many in the female founder community who are fed up, p*ssed up and in slight disbelief. Be experts in your problem, be the right team to solve the problem - there is no way this group of lads, even with a female employee, are the right fit to build a club for 'girls'. Some might say this is naive, but as founders, leaders and company directors, I believe we have responsibility. To think about the impact we are making, the ethics of our business, the message that we are putting out into the world. All this company is doing by saying they are the ones to ensure the girlies thrive is perpetuating the reputation that you can only make it big if you fit the mould. Sometimes I wonder if…. 💁♂️ I’d been an early 20’s man … Instead of an early 20’s woman. 💸 We’d received seed funding and grants … Instead of fully self funding. 🛒 We’d supplied the big supermarkets … Instead of focusing on high-end, not-known-to-the-masses, independents. ❓Would we have gained media interest, more speaking and start-up story ‘success’ sharing opportunities, and greater acknowledgement for our achievements? I wondered then and I wonder now. Business success should not always be measured by the outside help received (“We must be good, we gained investment”), the perceived BIG wins, and never the identifying characteristics of the founders.
