Passionate supporter of student success in an Early College program. Connecting access to education to future achievement
Early College helps students by reducing anxiety, familiarizing them with the college experience, provide pathways to help inform them about careers and determine whether or not college is a good investment for them. It reaches students who would not have these opportunities and brings the academics to them in their high school classrooms. #earlycollegewins #careercounseling
“Choosing a college is full of anxiety and sometimes results in bad decisions. We need a comprehensive career counseling system to help potential students determine whether a college program is worth the investment,” said Martin Vanderwerf, CEW director of editorial and education policy. I am excited to presenting at the virtual conference of the New England Consortium of the National Career Development Association State Career Development Associations on First Generation Employees: Best Practices for Workforce Development for Immigrant/Refugee High School Students. Here is the link to attend: https://lnkd.in/gMWmBURu Presentation details: We often talk about how to support first generation college students, but what about first generation employees? In this presentation you will learn best practices for workforce development with high school students, specifically students who are immigrants or refugees. Topics covered include how to break down career skills in a way that is culturally relevant and trauma informed. You will learn how to work with young people from start to end: from making sure they are eligible to work with the documents required, the application process including how to explain the fields on job applications, jobs that work well for students with limited English proficiency, how to coach students on following up on their application and interview preparation, filling out hiring paperwork, explaining pay stubs, and what is expected at a job. We will break down “professionalism” and what that means including expectations for types of communication, problem solving, community norms, decision making, and showing characteristics such as demonstrating initiative, flexibility and reliability. This workshop will help prepare you to work with anyone in their first job, but especially young people who are immigrants or refugees.

When sharing about the importance of apprenticeships, Jason Woodward, Plant Manager at Geislinger Corporation shared, "25% of Geislinger's employees are machinists, with another 10% having been promoted from a machinist role. For us, it's critical to have this program to help safeguard our future talent pipeline. In addition, as someone who came through an apprenticeship, I know the impact it can have on the careers and lives of those who go through the program as well as the benefits to the company. Thanks to the help from Michigan Works! Southwest getting us connected with the right people and organizations, the process was very simple and straightforward."
