An insightful webinar this afternoon from the The Social Mobility Foundation on why we should report on class pay gap. Despite there being no evidence to link performance at work with socio-economic background (SEB), social class remains one of the biggest barriers to career progression. The outcomes become even worse for those with the multilayered disadvantage of being from a lower SEB and a woman. In the UK, people from lower SEBs earn an average of 12% less than their higher SEB counterparts in the same role, which effectively translates to them working 30 days for free each year. Leading organisations are doing more to collate and publish data relating to their class pay gaps, but nearly every organisation needs to do more to earn the trust of employees to increase their data collection rates and improve on their pay gap and promotion rates. This work will help to ensure that ambitious and hard working people can fulfil their potential in spite of their class backgrounds.

📊 The 2023 CUPA-HR Higher Education Employee Retention Survey results are in! In her latest Our Thoughts On article, Hayley Planitzer summarizes the survey results, which reveal several key findings regarding the higher education industry: 🎢 Industry Instability: Approximately one-third of respondents are likely to seek other employment. 😓 Overworked Departments: Of those surveyed, employees in Student Affairs, Enrollment Management and Academic Affairs are most likely to seek new jobs due to expanding responsibilities and limited resources, leading to overwork and stress. I had a very informative day today at the Institute for Employment Studies annual conference. The theme was 'creating a sustainable workforce', and speakers drew attention to some serious issues being faced in UK workplaces. Tony Wilson kicked off the day with a presentation that highlighted many of these key issues: The prolonged decline in labour market participation – the lowest in a generation; A growing number of people out of work with long-term health problems; The rise in the number of people that have never worked; Increasing problems with presenteeism; Growing numbers of employers stating they have ‘skills shortage vacancies’; A lack of ‘good jobs'; Not enough support for people seeking work. A range of other points were discussed through the day including: Poor recruitment practices amongst many employers; Declining levels of employee engagement; Not enough opportunities for flexible working; New management challenges brought by hybrid working. There are so many issues that need to be addressed. As Nita Clarke of the INVOLVEMENT AND PARTICIPATION ASSOCIATION summarised in her presentation at the end of the event, if we are serious about tackling these it will require a national effort and true partnership working between employers, industry bodies, trade unions, education and training providers and government. Our future productivity depends on it.
