Founder and Managing Director, The Fitting Room | Creating Hype, Demand and Legacy | Ad Age Leading Women in Marketing, Advertising and Media
Entry-level should mean entry-level. This approach has played a key role in our mission to be an employer of choice and how we build up and welcome a range of people. And two of our awesome The Fitting Room team members stand as a testament to that. Aimee Hogan has recently been promoted to Senior Social and Community Executive and Orla Sheridan PR and Influencer Account Executive. After starting with us as assistants last year. Orla joined us straight from retail and Aimee an internship. So, how to show you’re right for a job if you’re new to the industry? I asked Aimee and Orla to share some tips that I could share for younger people looking to change direction. ⭐ Engage with the social channels of your dream agencies or brands. Show them you're not just interested, but obsessed with their work! ⭐ Research, research, research. It's a good way to start understanding industry language and the variation of job roles. This will help you articulate better why you want to interview for this particular role. ⭐ Reach out directly to agencies/connect with people who work in the creative spaces you want to be in rather than relying on an application - there will be 200 other people applying for the same role you want, and you’re more likely to stand out by getting in touch directly. ⭐ Your cover letter shouldn't be a novel. Agencies swim in a sea of paperwork daily so try to stay punchy, highlighting your top skills. ⭐ Personality is key. In interviews, it's not just about nailing the usual questions. Share your passions whether that is surfing, hunting for London's best foodie spots, or being a Swiftie. Be yourself - because if you get the job you can’t put on an act every day! Next week we open our entry-level world further as we host our first mixer in a few years at HQ and start our hunt for Junior Video Producer and Social Content Assistant.
