⚽ Football deal value is 💥 thanks to private capital In recent years, private capital has been flowing into football and increasing dealmaking specially following a MCO, a situation where a party has investment stakes, as minority or majority shareholder, in more than one football club. These MCOs often operate by having a “star club” at the top of the pyramid competing in the strongest leagues and adding smaller “satellite clubs” as part of the MCO structure. ✔ 41.7% of the “Big Five” European clubs are part of an MCO structure as of the 2023-2024 season. ✔ 60.0% of the Big Five clubs operating within an MCO structure have US participation at the ownership level. Silver Lake, Ares Management Corporation, 777 Partners, MSP Sports Capital, Pacific Media Group, Arctos and #BlueCo are all private capital sponsors currently investing in MCOs. Love it or hate it, multi-club ownership (MCO) in sports is here to stay. 📈 It has been steadily growing for over a decade and shows no signs of slowing. If anything, the growth of MCO is accelerating. ✈️ Multi-club groups are becoming increasingly international: American groups are now looking to Europe for acquisitions; Indian Premier League groups own teams across four other leagues (probably increasing to five once the ECB sells its Hundred teams). 🪣 Multi-club groups are becoming more diverse: they are investing across more and more sporting codes and leagues. 💰 But, aside from the finances, what other factors are important for multi-club groups?
