In a meta-analysis of 34 studies that evaluated children hospitalized for traumatic injury, treatment in pediatric trauma centers (PTC) was associated with lower mortality than in an adult trauma center (odds ratio 0.59). For seriously injured infants, children, and younger adolescents, these findings support treatment in a PTC. When a level 1 PTC is unavailable, these children should receive care at a hospital with the highest level of pediatric trauma expertise and resources. This is indeed true! However, venue of care is very important. We must continue to point patients to the proper venue of care and make care accessible to them. It can’t just be the ED! Urgent Care, virtual visits and PCP/specialist visits are all with this care context. Add-on office visits are a must and can be augmented by APPs working with their physicians. Some health institutions even have after-hours PCP/specialist clinics staffed by APPs with virtual (outside serviced or hospital’s own medical group) physicians just a button or a call away. #accesstocare #technology #healthcare
