Christopher Nolan Says Streaming-Only Content Is a 'Danger': An anonymous reader writes: Christopher Nolan made headlines earlier this month when he took a playful jab at streaming platforms while discussing the upcoming home release of "Oppenheimer." The atomic bomb drama, which grossed a staggering $950 million in theaters worldwide, is hitting Blu-ray and other digital platforms this month. Nolan said at a recent "Oppenheimer" screening that it's important to own the film on Blu-ray so that "no evil streaming service can come steal it from you." He told The Washington Post in a follow-up interview: "It was a joke when I said it. But nothing's a joke when it's transcribed onto the internet. There is a danger, these days, that if things only exist in the streaming version they do get taken down, they come and go," the director added. Streamers have become notoriously known in the last year for pulling original titles from their platforms in order to license them out elsewhere and open up potential revenue streams. When such titles are streaming-only offerings, their removal makes it impossible to view the films elsewhere. Such was the case this year with the Disney movie "Crater," for instance. The streaming-only family adventure was pulled from Disney in June and could not be viewed anywhere until it was reissued as a digital release months later in September. For Nolan, owning physical media is the only way to combat such streaming trends. Guillermo del Toro agrees, having shared Nolan's recent quotes on X (formerly Twitter) and adding his own commentary on the issue. "Physical media is almost a Fahrenheit 451 (where people memorized entire books and thus became the book they loved) level of responsibility," del Toro wrote to his followers. "If you own a great 4K HD, Blu-ray, DVD etc etc of a film or films you love...you are the custodian of those films for generations to come." Read more of this story at Slashdot.

1.6 million views! It was been quite a challenge to create these, but it has also pushed me to enhance my skills in lighting 💡, camera 🎥, and editing ✂. Creating multiple recipe content for a renowned brand like M&S, known for its distinct aesthetic and style, posed its challenges. I had to carefully consider elements like lighting, camera movements, and frame rates to ensure the edits aligned with M&S's image while catering to TikTok's format. I drew inspiration from M&S's classic TV advertisements. However being aware it had to adapt to TikTok's fast-paced nature, that was advised and ideated by the TikTok team at Simply Social. This mix of styles required a careful balance between tradition and innovation from pre- to post-production. Throughout the process, I remained mindful of M&S's established aesthetic, striving to maintain its sophistication and attention to detail. By blending M&S's signature style with TikTok's demands, we aimed to create recipe content that showcased the brand's culinary expertise while resonating on a modern social media platform.

I think there is more 'hope' and positivity in this article than the headline suggests. 1.) Yes, the licensing of shows from one streaming service to another I GUESS is disheartening and could possibly disincentivize streamers to create new tv series. Sure, but also, how great are those shows that the demand for them lasts for decades. To Judd's point on content, we don't need MORE 'content'. We need good stories, and those shows like Sex and the City, were so good that they still hold so much value for audiences today. 2.) Yes, tech experts have an insane influence over Hollywood, measuring every project against some arbitrary, data backed scale of what will succeed and what will flop. To be honest, I think the odds for these streaming platforms is pretty much the same as it was for studios in the past. Most projects you green light will flop, and a couple winners will pay for them all. However, the budgets have gotten so outrageous that for some of these studios and platforms, the winners aren't able to pay for the losses. This, then, causes the 'behemoths' to be even more risk averse and shy away from the innovative, risky projects. Ironically, with the example of Oppenheimer and Everything Everywhere all at Once, those innovative, risky projects are more often than not, the ones that win. 3.) The message that always seems to come through whenever I read these articles is the same truth that has always existed. Audiences are smart. They want to be challenged with high quality, interesting stories that start conversations and create a social culture around them. https://lnkd.in/g5VJRuGC

It's time a creator won an Emmy. Creators are no longer just recording vlogs from their bedrooms. They have writers' rooms, production teams, and business strategies, developing programming that's not only popular but also breaking boundaries. They deserve the same acclaim as other creative professionals. Recognizing creators at the Primetime Emmys won’t detract from its storied history but will continue its legacy of honoring modern culture and building a bridge to the next generation of viewers. When the Academy started in 1946, television was a new medium, and it has evolved significantly. Including creators now is a necessary evolution to stay in step with the mainstream. Viewers today are tuning into YouTube as much as traditional media. Shows like "Hot Ones" and "Good Mythical Morning" have millions of subscribers and billions of views. Creators are not only reflecting current cultural trends but also driving them, responding to audience feedback in real time, and pushing the boundaries of entertainment. As we enter an era driven by AI, creators are leading the way, using new tools to enhance and expand their creativity. The Emmys should celebrate all forms of entertainment that captivate audiences.
